Learn to read typo, the new language of the Caribbean!
|
logging in to play, does not mean that you will get any rep points....lol..you might just chat all night and still have a blast
|
I pity anyone who is not already a Master (Level 25) at Grenades!
Because, you will NEVER master them now, after the "upgrade" of 10/16/08! The VIL for today is: Never trust, or expect, a Disney upgrade to actually IMPROVE the game! |
Here's a couple of items..... 1) since the "gliches" have been removed in the latest "update", ALWAYS travel in a pack to do quests !!! 2) NEVER sail ALONE !! (if u do feel the need, I'll see you either in jail or the shipwright's office !!) 3) DON'T trust your favorite wallhack....The soldiers will come after you !! Enjoy the game !!! :h-skull:
|
When sailing with a small crew, 2 or 3 people, the best ship for this is any type of Frigate. The cannons that are mounted in the front have nice access to the port and starboard sides, and when you can get you enemy directly in front of you, you can drop your sails and back up! Those 2 (or 4) front guns can just pick the enemy ship apart, and since you are facing the enemy, you are offering them a small target of your own ship.
|
Note to self.... When fighting... look at the lvl above enemies heads. Don't take ur lvl 24 pirate up against a lvl 28 and lvl 20 bad guys... tonic just no cut it .... RUN if u can LOL :P
|
when doing scavenger hunt...learn how to upload before the actual day of the hunt....upload throughout the event...and dont wait until 20 minutes before the close of the upload window.... also print out the directions instead of switching back and forth...
Thanks Basil for the fun time.... I would definately do another one. to the outcasts, sorry I messed up the screen shots...still had fun, but next time I will come up with a better method using photo bucket. |
When planning a scavenger hunt for your guild, remember no matter how easy-going and fun-loving they appear to be, that they are actually a large group of obsessive compulsive's who will indeed attempt to do everything on your list.
Lol admit it guys... we are OCD... why else would we moan about how hard it is to level up nades, stand for hours at the fence (before the fix), or risk losing our skin pigment from living in the tormenta caves. |

The Colossus flagship can be loaded up with as many as 3 Bosses! Boarding it solo is almost a guaranteed trip to jail!

Don't feed/pet the noobs. They will only come back for more.

Obsessiveness: Logging into the game within seconds of getting out of bed, on a Saturday morning when you haven't even started the coffee pot yet!

Your first staff
You hit level 30, get the quest for the first staff. If you drop everything and just go work on getting it, you are still level 30 when you have acquired it. Now, how to level it up to match your other weapons?
Level it up on low level enemies until you have enough skills points to put 2 points in "wither". Now, take some tonics, and go to the parade grounds on Kings Head. The same 7 Navy that used to be so great for leveling nades are also great for staff! Position yourself right in front of the middle guard in the first row, the Officer should be directly in front of you, and just use wither! You can easily level up to at least level 17 here! Plus, you should make about 7K in gold while doing it. (At least, Until Disney messes this up, too!) |
With the latest update,, War Sloops are the most dangerous things to tackle at sea. They are faster than your Galleon or Frigate, and pack a heck of a punch. Keep your eyes open for them.
|
HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!
VIL's entries will resume this weekend! |
Update to the post about Enemy War Sloops; The Corsairs are firing High Explosives broadsides.

LOL Well now you tell me! Wish I could have learned that very important lesson before taking on that barracuda... :laughks2: I try to avoid them now whenever possible. I guess it is true that you cant judge a ship by it's size |

dont i know it, it hurts (a lot almost guaranteed to sink) hehehe |
When you plan a night called, "Guild Help Night", Make sure that there is a fairly even distribution of senior and low level pirates that are gonna participate.
|
After all is said and done, Tormenta still seems to be the best place to finish leveling nades. Once you get nades to level 21 or so, "a nigh impossible proposition" in it's own right, then the only place to get any real rep is on the urchins and molusks.
|
Here's something I've found.... for you new guys..... if you need to sail somewhere, and can't or dont want to engage the enemy ships, TP to either the french or spanish islands. (this TP is available to all, even if you dont have TP yet..) then sail out to your destination. The enemy ships will ignore you unless you open fire on them. Just watch out for SvS players from the opposing island. Saavvy ???
|
Thanks to the last update: Quite often when you teleport to someone elses' location, you end up in the water. This is not a glitch or a bug, it's a 'feature'. When this happens, just teleport to them again (and again, and again) til you get to where you wanted to be.
Then you find out that you picked the wrong name out of your friends list, and you went to the wrong person anyway! |
Hex is back! (sort of...)
Hex Eater shot now apparently works the way it was first intended. You shoot a voodoo user with it until they lose all voodoo power. For a few seconds, they will be without voodoo, and then it will gradually rebuild, similar to ours. The time period is supposed to be 15 seconds, but I'm not sure it actually takes that long for their power to start building, but it is enough time to switch to cutlass and whack them a few times. Whatever... It's not the way it used to be, when it removed all voodoo capabilities, but it is much more useful than it was after the last up(down)grade! |
Take a crew full of healers with you if you are going to attack the Boss Stumps.
|
lol.. the only reason we were there was Jeff knew of a legitimate way to get permission to tp to your AFK sleeping self.
As I said.. the lack of "*Mmmmm's" gave you away. =) Lesson: There are ways to get where you want to go. It's all in how you Frame your question. Not giving the details.. want this weapon for future use. |
The lag on Ship Vs. Ship is still terrible! Even on a quiet server, with only 3 or 4 ships sailing, ships seem to just jump from place to place, cannon shots only occur aout 3 seconds AFTER you fire them, and Lightning loccks up your screen for a few seconds every time it strikes.
|
aye u notice that ....think it worse now than before......plus tp for ammo and ending up under the island.
|
I think we're all just too quick on the uptake for the game. All firing at the same time and rapidly... heh
|
There are a lot of quests that have overlapping items, i.e., Jewelry, clothing and Tat quests for Tortuga all require you to sink ships. If you take all of these quests at the same time, you can get them done faster. Because, sinking one ship may satisfy a requirement for 2 or even 3 of the quests. The negative side of this is that you won't earn near as much rep than if you performed each quest one at a time.
|
Even level 38's can go to jail if they don't pay attention!
Just spent almost an hour reading these. This should be required reading for all Noobs!!!! |
I had a brand new VIl the other night. It was actually a quite good one. Put it out in Guild chat, and then forgot to post it here.
Now I don't remember it! So, today's VIL is: When you have a VIL, post it before you forget it! |
VIL: In SvS on a crazy-A server, turn crew matching off then back on, at least once every 15 minutes.
|
Quote:
The other day, Charles asked us to check our servers to see how busy SVS was. And we were all like.... Umm how do you do that??? ... now we know. |

which leads to my VIL... never assume everyone knows what you already know... Share the simplest info... |
Timothy Dalton, the undead Gypsy Boss on PDf back beach, has become the favorite pincushion of the game. Even at level 39, using 4 weapons at level 24, but with low skill levels, I am still earning 250 + rep every single time.
|
It's hard to start over again, especially on your fourth pirate. You always reach for weapons, or skills, that you haven't earned yet!
|
Nades for speed

|
dont try to teleport, jsut to escape, when fighting it will never happen .......kinda ..... lol
|
VIL: Never make your gunners switch cannons. The 9 second penalty for them to switch is three volleys of fury, that you lose, just to miss with your other side's broadsides.
|
VIL: Careful with your whispers! If you whisper to one pirate, then to another within three seconds, it won't tell you, but it will revert to whispering to the pirate you were previously whispering to! The first indication you get that something is amiss, is after the whisper has been sent to the wrong pirate!
Likewise, if someone you are whispering to, changes servers or logs out, chat will revert to the last other chat (for example, CREW) that you were using. |
VIL: If you have one (or more) friends on board level 10 or lower, LAND THE CARGO. They need the gold. (Don't be like me, and sink!)
|
VIL: When you start a new pirate on TEST, do not purchase any "tonic" or "remedy" potions, only "holy water," "elixir" and "miracle water" until you are level 10 notoriety, or else you will drink something too weak, when you press "T."
|
This is for all those people who just got on the test server:
If you spend too much time on TEST, you let your current ingame pirates get lazy! LOL |
VIL: If you are going to go on vent make sure you remember to plug in your mic or you feel real stupid when you notice it is unplugged :laughks2: the next day. **** (Saturday)
|
VIL: When changing graphics options (low/medium/high/custom) it does not always require you to logout after saving changes. Log out and back in anyhow!
|
Haha
[Left blank
|
VIL: With every new D update the only thing that you can count on are more crashes and drops...
|
VIL: When you shoot the masts off an NPC ship, that ship moves slower. When you shoot holes in the sails of an NPC ship, that ship moves slower.
But when you shoot the masts off an SvS ship, it loses the weight of its masts...therefore goes faster. (Mostly true for war sloops, but sloops and light sloops, too.) If you shoot holes in the sails of a light sloop in SvS, it will go slower...only until its mast is removed (at which point it goes faster than it could, with the weight of the mast.) |
VIL: When someone whispers to you, you can reply by typing ALT-Enter (Mac users: Option-Enter) instead of typing F then waiting for panel to open, then clicking guild button, then waiting, then clicking online, then trying to find them to click on them, then waiting 5 seconds for the user info panel to appear, then clicking the whisper icon, then moving the mouse down inside the chat window, then waiting another two seconds before starting typing.
VIL: Is you want to be added to a ship's crew, say "crew me please" in local chat, so that the captain can just click your name in the local chat window, without zooming in and looking around on the ship for you. |
If you really want to do the Grenade quest alone, just search the barrels and creates that you think are easy for you...then switch servers and re-search the same spots..keep switching servers and searching the same spots until you completed it all by yourself.
|
This is ok if you don't want any rep while searching. But, It is realy pretty easy to do KH alone, just attack the soldier guarding the barrel or crate first, before searching. That way you have him defeated and can search uninterrupted. Also, you earn the rep and gold.

Alright Basil, I know you hate comments in this thread...it's not a discussion. But wow, those Leuits were kickin out rears last night. After the fourth time in jail for me, It was decided to go plunder. Call out some healers before trying this one below lev 25 again.
|
VIL: 1st retraining of a weapon is 250 gold, 2nd retraining is 2,500 gold, 3rd-5th retraining is 10,000 gold. Spend your skill points wisely.
|
Fort Charles on Port Royal just isn't as fun as it used to be. There are fewer Navy Soldiers to fight with, especially in the main courtyard.
The old Fort was always crowded during lunch time with pirates trying to level their new doll, or other weapons. You never see many people in the new one at all. |
VIL:
If you are going to read all the posts in this thread, be prepared to spend at least an hour here! And there is still a ton of good info in this thread. |
VIL: Duct Tape is the best and cheapest baby sitter known to mankind......
|
When your first pirate is turning 40 and you want a cool screen shot to remember it by.. DO NOT hit f12 first to clear all the chat from the screen. All you get is a pic of your pirate holding a weapon on an empty screen. lol
|
Oh, that stinks! See, this is why you master near us cause we're all screenie taking crazy and someone would've caught it. Haha

My order of buying ships: ( just my opinion)
Light Sloop - given to ya. Skip the other "Light" class ships. First ship to buy: Regular frigate when you can. 5K isn't that much, and you can now carry 9 cargo. This ship will help you get sailing to level 15 faster than the regular Galleon or Sloop. Keep the light sloop for speed runs to other islands. Second ship to buy: War Galleon as soon as you hit level 15 sail and have the gold. This is the ship you will use to earn the gold you need for anything else you want to buy. Keep the Frigate for small crew action, and the light sloop for speed runs. (Some people stop here. This is enough to keep them happy.) Third ship to buy: War Frigate, when you can afford it. Sell the regular frigate in order to make space for it. Last ship to buy: War Sloop. Sell the light sloop to make room. |
VIL: Saving for the the bigger ships.
Do not worry about buying the ammo pouches until you have at least a War Galleon. It means a few more runs to the blacksmith or gun shop, but that money is better spent (imo) on larger class vessels. Please refer to Basil's "ship buying order" on which ships to purchase in order of importance. PS: leveling gerds on KH - ask a friend to tp to you while you make an ammo run so that you do not waste time sailing back to the island. If a friend is not available, launch from the Spanish island to avoid having to fight NPC ships. |
Additional note to Rackat's VIL:
Use the ~ on your keyboard to check the SvS action prior to using the Spanish Isle as a ship launching site. If the Spanish side has more ships in SvS, you will not be able to launch your ship. (It's an automatic setting to try and keep the sides equal.) Otherwise the SvS islands also make great places to go to for getting more ammo... no town to run through at all. |
not really to do with the game but a VIL anyway:
NEVER lick wasabi sauce off the edge of a knife |
And if you do be prepared for the energy rush it is going to give you!!

To Guild Officers of all Guilds:
When trying to clean up messy situations in a guild.. remind yourself that it's just like cleaning out a vegetable bin. You only toss out the bad fruit..not the good. |
I've noticed this for awhile now.
When you have a large crew, you can't get everyone on board the ship. A War Gall should hold 10 crew, but only 9 can board, the last one gets told that the ship is full. Same with the 12 crew War Frigate, only 11 can board. I've reported this to Disney. The fix: Once the crew is onboard, and the last person is being told that the ship is full, the captain (owner) of the ship should TP to shore. Let the missing crew member board, then the captain can reboard. No one gets left behind. |
When out plundering the big ships, don't let the person who is continuously getting disco'ed do the steering. It tends to hurt!!

When trying to hold off on leveling up, make sure you leave yourself slightly over 100 points...you just may pick up one of those rare treasures for the first time, and prematurely glow.

While it's best NOT to randomly friend or accept random friend and crew requests - there is no real downside to taking a moment to heal or aid a fellow pirate in your travels. After all, you never know when Karma dictates that you need a hand back.
*NOTE: There is a difference between 'aiding' someone and 'kill stealing' from them. Learn the difference. I tend to not attack someone else's opponent; I choose to heal them or cast Curse or Shackles on their enemy to lend a hand. |
It can never hurt to have too many friends

The trick to winning in poker: never staying too long. The game is Still The Same. |
Using the 'stow away' feature
I brought up 4 pirates without using this, it wasn't available. Now I'm on numbers 5 and 6, and I'm finding that I still don't use it. I can see the purpose, especially when you can't TP to Cuba, and you have to go see Tia Dalma, but it never occurs to me to use it. My thoughts: No Pirate that can teleport needs it, and the level of pirate that does need it is wasting her/his gold by using it. Better off to take the time and sail to the island you need, and sink a ship or two along the way. Make gold, not spend it. |
I know you said keep it short Basil but you also said write it while you are thinking it. So here ya go.
1. If you go looking for someone and don't find them, stop looking, they will find you! 2. If you look up at your clock and it's 2am or after, even if you don't want to, get off Pirates, cause it's almost a given that you will be on POF for the next hour. 3. Playing to late before bed will make one of two things happen, you won't sleep because you still want to be playing, or you will dream in pirate. 4. When you really want to be on Pirates real life or something else will always intrude. :HO4thLiberty03::fireworks1::HO4thFireworks: |
four baby pirates that are lvls 8, 8, 9 and 12 cant keep each other all alive while fighting lvl 16 or higher.

Not about pirates but....
When you find you have to do a full factory restore on your computer don't make one copy of your files, make 2. If you only make one it will be blank and everything irreplaceable will be gone forever. |
OH NO Honey you didn't.... Can you take it in and have the experts pull it off for you. I know sometimes it can be done. I am crying for you!!!

Never blink while trying to sink a Behemoth. If you do it will sink you!
Also, if you think you should sink the Marauder on the way to a Monarch, sink the Marauder, or he too will sink you! |
When your Guildmasters warn you about spamming, try to keep your mouth shut unless its Important!
|
No matter how annoying, frustrating, and eternal the Pirate Life quest is, do it with your baby pirate anyway! It gives excellent rep and money, levels your sailing, cannons, and a ton of your weapons. I know, I've been working this quest almost daily since I was a lowly 14. Kat is nearly finished and is now almost a 24! This is one of the few side quests I have taken, so much of that goes to the Pirate Life quest!
Longer than normal VIL but a point that needed to be made. |
Buy all the clothes and Tats you want before you do the side quest or the quests will fill all of the available spots and you will not be able to buy anything without selling your hard earned quest items!
|
dont pile up your skill points on combo attacks because that will just make leveling that much harder ;-)
|
In response to spending your skill points.
With very few exceptions, Only put only 1 point on each skill. Attune and heal, broadsides, and maybe a few of the passives get more than one point each. All the others, the more points you put into them, the harder it is to level. Keeping your damage low guarantees you high rep per kill. 3 of my 4 fully mastered pirates had over 80 unspent points when they hit level 40, and one had 106 unspent spoints when he fully mastered. Even after fully mastering, I kept an average of 5 points per weapon/skill in reserve, for future needs. |
VIL:
If you ask Basil for $5, he will not deliver. Nine times out of ten, he will refer you to Sarah. |
Never underestimate the power of the guild!
|
The new caves are awesome. I'm sure there will be planty of new VIL's coming out soon.
HEY, my 2000th post!!!!! |
You know your Gm is crazy when he gives every new recruit a free crate.
You know your Co-Gm is crazy when he goes along with it and wears Capris. |
If you are a 35, do NOT try a Thrall Captain. One bladestorm and down you will go! But boy will it be funny!:laughks2:
When most of the guild tells you frigates have their uses, listen. They do. (But I still love my galleon, that's what's gonna make me the other 40K I need.) |
Regardless of how many times people revive you, you'll still be killed again.
|
When you know holiday quest events are coming up there are some things you need to remember to do before the quest is offered.
1. Finish some of the minor quests that you already have started. 2. Delete quests that you accepted but didn't start. You can't delete a money quest you already started. 3. Don't take any of the money quests (such as the ones from Josie or Sam Seabones). A full quest log will prevent you from being able to accept the special event quests. I learned this the hard way with the Father's Day double rep event. Some of my pirates were not allowed to pick up the quest due to a full to-do list. |
This may seem obvious and may have been said before but it bears repeating...
Know what your pirate can and can not do! Scuse the explanation here. My main pirate did not start her life with DW. Early on she fought alone a lot. I learned what she could and could not do by experience. I was a level 11 taking on 15s on the wall at Fort Charles. Because I knew I could! I learned by playing. I knew what each of her weapons could do and her limits. I pushed them but only learned more. In light of the invasions, and all the people getting knocked out right and left, remember what your pirate can do! This leads to VIL 2. Close range with Jolly Roger is not a good idea! So you get a hit or 2 in. Then ya die. I find by hanging out at the very fringe of his wither type attack I take little to no damage but can shoot, grenade, or flaming skull at JR for massive damage. (Personally I prefer flaming skull, but that's just me.) Point is ranged attacks keep you alive and fighting longer. (Ya, know it was supposed to be short, just needed explination.) |
In going along with what was just said, I offer this little tidbit that has been my motto for quite some time... not that i ever take my own advice...
Note to self: Do not try to take on things that find me more appealing as a shish kabob... |
With all the flaming skulls and nades flying during an invasion attempting to grind a single attack weapon during an invasion is a futile endeavor!
