What exactly are the phase files? Sorry but I'm not familiar with this.

The phase files are the game :) (well, the bulk of it anyway)

The code that executes to become the game, the 3D models, the maps, the textures that cover models, the music.

They are compresssed using a selection of different processes, some of which (models, textures, music) can be unpacked with tools supplied with Panda3D while others may require different code utilies.

Ooh and people can view it? Just by going into their files?

Yep :) Well almost, there is at least one very handy tool out there that make the process simpler ;)

Phase1.pyd holds a copy of the game code as does phase_1.mf (Among other stuff, dll's and the like). The two copies are compared at runtime by Launcher.exe (as well as it checking BD5 checksum values) to ensure that they are the same, I assume to reduce simple hacking of the client.
