If you're on level 39, for instance, the amount of rep needed that is shown is for the next level.

It is a bit confusing, and I was confused for a little while also. But if you work backwards, 40 is 40,400. Even though 40,400 is shown when you're level 39, it's what is need to be at level 40. So it's the rep you need to attain a certain level.
