So is a name based off a comic book in the lines of those? Example: Superman or Spider-man

Well this one gets overlooked quite a bit. I've used the name Captain Grizzly Blackwater since the first beta and it's never been rejected on any of the pirates I've submitted it for.

Agree with Zep that it must depend on who is reviewing the names. I had Edward Teach on one of my phase 1 beta pirates and couldn't get it accepted on any pirate since but I've seen at least 3 running around in game. We even have a member with that name in the guild.

You were told wrong David, this is how the name thing goes:
You can either choose a pirate name, immediately accepted and thats your name!

or

You can type a name, and then its sent to be accepted or rejected.

"Names must be at least three letters"

I have a pirate named Xi in both live and test. :sign0153:

The name wasn't accepted right away...took a few days.

I guess I'm illegal??? :bird-vi:

Xi

One of my friends like couple months ago had to have his name change cause his name was accepted in error. lol

Eddee 11-16-2008 11:07 PM

I see people running around with names like captain anne and stuff, and i submitted the name 'Nobody.' and they wouldn't let me have it, i'd read all the guidelines and i can't see how that is against them in any way.

David 11-16-2008 11:45 PM

well ok, example: me, i used my "first" name in the game, as my pirate. I also used the same first name when i registered. But my account is still there after 8 months.

1.)Why did they approve my name? 2.) Even if they didn't mean to, is there still a possibility for me getting banned?

Bartholomew Foulsteel 11-16-2008 11:55 PM

I BELIEVE that Big D only relooks names if they are reported. If they are reported as improper names, I would GUESS that you wouldn't catch the ban--you would probably have to rename your pirate.

No Disney/cartoon characters? I named a character Grumpy just recently though (actually approved, though I don't know if I've deleted him or not). Strange, eh? (He was modeled after my Disney shirt with said dwarf of said name.)

Oh, I think we should be able to do something like Dog Flint with the pre-approved names: you know, ditching one part of the last name and all.

David 11-17-2008 01:55 AM

wait, even if you did make your pirate's name, the same name you used to register your real name...... then you can always change your name in the "Account Management" section, so if they check it, the name from your pirate and your real name you registered with would be completely different! lol

I think they were primarily trying to prohibit characters from the POTC franchise.

I recently saw a pirate with the name "Noone" the other day.

I tried to name my pirate Hook Don Phoenix but thet refused to approve it.

My boyfriend's user name is Captain Crossbones... he hasn't gotten any flack for having Captain... and mine has my first name. All of my pirates do, but I used a default last name that I liked when submitting, so I guess they didn't really care. I.E. Lauren Heartskull

It does seem that thier review staff varies, and some stick to the letter of the rule, and others apply it towards what it was intended for. If theres no harm intended one may allow it for example. Trying to prohibit "Captain" in a pirate game, with pirate ships is well.. good luck with that.

I have a few names that I had to ask for more than once before I was granted them. I wont mention them further.. hehe. But love my pirates.

First of all big fan of you zeppers how ever i have seen many names with "captain"

Yes agreed, I was pointing out the fact, that we obviously see it used frequently in the game, yet if you read the rules it actually specifically states its an illegal name!!!
