How do you fire a worthless old rusty cannon from your War Frigate if you have nothing to ignite the fuse with?

Hmm, just a guess, you fire the cannon that it's put in?

Get the cannon to insult you, there's a way to ignite the fuse. Then shout "YOU'RE FIRED!" and ta da, you've fired a cannon from your War Frigate.
