Am I Too Old To Be A Pirate?

I started playing POTCO last September. I needed to temporarily escape Toontown drama. I did not, consistently play POTCO in the past few months, because I was trying to max bossbot on my toon. Since my toon is getting very close to maxing boss, I started playing more POTCO. Yesterday, one of my pirate friends assumed I was a teen, and asked for my age. I told him, I am a Mom, and I have a pre-teen daughter. With this conversation, he told me, he was a teen. But, he was very surprised, that at my age, I still play POTCO. He could not believe it! I can only imagine, how he will react, if he finds out, I play Toontown too, LOL! So now, I am curious, are the majority of players in the pre-teen, or teen years? Are there a lot of grown ups out there, who loves the Caribbean as much as I do? Is there any adult clan that I can join? Should I sail to the End of The World, and never return to the pirate realm?

'ave a great day!:piratear:

Dr. Zeppers 05-02-2009 06:06 PM

Not at all. Actually there are probably MORE adult players than kids.

In over a years play I have met ONE teen that was surprised adults were playing in POTCO.
I know very few children in TT myself although im sure that most of the players there very well maybe kids. However when I choose to play TT, I play with my adult friends there as well.

I think these teens that are surprised by this are teens whose parents generally show no interest in computers or games so from their perspective of observing their parents, it surprises them. Or their parents choose harsher games to participate in.. blood splattering shooters, or mind melting puzzle games... been there done that, and found POTCO, and TT refreshing.

Though many are in their pre-teen or teen years... ther are many of us who are in our "not" teen years (in fact... there are many of us here that play who haven't seen "teen" year... in many years :D )

Yes, we have all run into a few teens and kids who have been quiet rude unfortunately about finding out "adults" playing - but they are rare and should just be ignored :) Little do they realise that in a few years... they will be adults answering these same questions :D

Take a gander through the Guild Section as well - as there are several guilds (both with Adult / Kid mix and Adult only players) to find a guild which may sound right for you :)

Sarah 05-02-2009 06:25 PM

Do I have to shake my cane at you now? I think you'll find plenty of "haven't been a teen in forever" players out there. ;)

Nelly Darkpaine 05-02-2009 06:26 PM

Adult here. =)

Ive met more adults than teens in game... but I also play in the evenings mostly.
I have my own adult guild, because most large guilds are WAY too chatty for my liking... I like to play, and dont want to scroll through chat to read my crew chat. =P
So, Ive never dealt well with big active guilds. LOL

Welcome to the game!

Of course! There's plenty!

Eh, who knows. My main guild is about 170 members, chiefly teens/pre-teens but with plenty of adults as well. My second guild is smaller and is all adults, as far as I know.

It's your choice, but I wouldn't recommend it. ;)

Almost all the members of your second guild are adults with the notable exception of the guild master and the officers (myself excluded).

To the OP: There is no reason to exclude yourself based on age. If you find gaming rewarding or relaxing then I suggest you enjoy yourself and leave the age discussions alone. Since Disney frowns on the release of personal information, it's best not to discuss your age, if you have children or anything else personal about you.

Basil Dreadflint 05-02-2009 07:58 PM

As Max and Zep said, There are many adult players. Check out the guild forums and see what attracts you. There are quite a few guilds that are mix, adult and younger, and there are a few that are adult only.

There are at least 3 in the general guild forums that advertise as adult only.

Never sail to the end of the world, it just tells you to turn around!
Sound advice.

There are some tricks too. Right at the end of school hours, the preteen and teens tend to be more prominent.
The other trick is to learn which servers tend to be filled with the younger players. They become obvious as you play the game.

Good-luck in your endeavors.

Majority of the player in the game are a little bit of both, young and old. But, as the others have said, there are slightly more adults than teens.

Plenty of POF's members are grown ups, and they're all playing the game... so yes :laughks2:

Theres quite a few guilds that are just full of a lot of grown ups. Dueces Wild and a few other guilds that are here are like that, and those guilds are doing well.

Quitting pirates is entirely up to you, but I wouldn't recommend it. Even if you were the only grown up player out there, as long as your having fun doing what you want to do, keep at it.

The Skirata Clan 05-03-2009 01:04 AM

I guess is the fact that most of us grew up with video games. Age is hard to tell or to figure out. Adults behaving like children (in the bad way) make it hard to tell. I always have my own little game trying to put ages to the pirates. I see Max, Zep, Sarah, and Greengene as the Fathers of POF (in a good way). But all and all Most of the people I have interacted have a level of maturity that shows some class and understanding of how to behave properly.

I also see Sven as a funny neighbor . Always wants to play or find a way to make things fun.

Father?? Ahem.

On another point of your post, there are a lot of TT and TTC folks here. Look around, I'm sure you'll find some familiar "faces"

I sorta agree with what Skirata says. Only thing... I don't see Sarah as a founding FATHER... something just doesn't fit there :laughks2:
And me as a funny neighbor? :buds:

But back on topic, as Skirata mentioned above, people act different ages in the game. Some younger people act more mature than others. While some older people can act like children (not in a good way). So in a way, younger people can seem like adults in the game, which would mean theres no problem for actual adults to play (if any of that made sense :mybadki6:).

The Count 05-03-2009 01:43 AM

Adults most have alot of free time to play ten year old games (jk) Anyway pirates is for anyone old or young or middle age but the game is really based for kids more than for adults.

I meant as in she is one of the few that seem to take care of us. As a game Elder if you will. And I see you as the neighbor that everyone wants to hang out.

Just clearing it out.

Sven Osymthe 05-03-2009 02:00 AM

No need to clear that up Skirata, I was just kidding lol

now quit taking me off topic ;)

Bartholomew Foulsteel 05-03-2009 02:30 AM

Let's see, I'm a dad with a dughter in college, so if YOU are too old....

I'm Peter Pan, mate. I'm never gonna grow up.

Cannonfury 05-03-2009 03:08 AM

I say more adults play. I myself am in college :)

Juliana Maria 05-03-2009 03:14 AM

I think I have met more adult pirates in this game than I have been teens. Have no worries mate ;) Ye not need to be sailing to Ends of the Earth.... unless you run out of rum, then there be no other choice for all hope would be lost :D hehehe

Miss Hexsilver 05-03-2009 03:22 AM

POTCO has a very kid friendly environment that can be enjoyed by kids and adults alike. I'm sure many adults also play Toontown.

Stephen O'Malley 05-03-2009 09:39 AM

What I find hilarious is that I meet so many mothers and fathers on POTCO and TT who are embarrassed to admit they play, so they say they play only because "its to help bond with their child", which is a completely reasonable explanation, but then you see that they play 6 hours a day longer than their children.........

At this point, POTCO is fun, and its whatever makes someone happy. If you're 80 years old and love video games, why NOT play?

MacIronhawk 05-03-2009 04:52 PM

I don't think anyone can say that there are more adult players on POTCO than teens.

If you say you've met an adult or a teen then I have to say, "I think you're a weirdo". Why would anyone ask someone else what type of age group they are in a game? I certainly wouldn't respond. I'd even report them for asking me that. I think most of us are smart enough to realize that answering that age group question is "against the rules".

I still don't think we'll know for sure if more adults play POTCO than teens unless POTCO passes out a survey. I just don't want to get on a side that ends up being wrong.

ukebec 05-03-2009 05:09 PM

My humble opinion is that if you're too old to enjoy playing then, yes, you're too old to play.

But obviously you enjoy POTCO and TT which means you are by no means too old to play.

So my advice is to unfurl your sails, wreak havoc on the seas and enjoy the pirate life!

AdmiralSavvy 05-03-2009 05:14 PM

POTCO is, like Miss Hexsilver said, very kid friendly but can be enjoyed by everyone. So it doesn't matter if you're young or old, if you enjoy the game, then you're fine. =)
In my opinion, you'll never truly know if they are more adults than kids or vice versa, (although I think that there are more adults). Why do I think this? Simple, kids can act like adults and adults can act like kids, and I speak from experience when I say that there are both...

You'll never know the person behind the pirate unless you make that happen, (which I highly doubt anybody in their right mind would allow...), so you never really know if there's something wrong with the person's thinking and what not. Someone who acts 13 can really be 31 for all you know. In my HONEST opinion, age should not be a factor of consideration while playing the game, it's against the rules, and plus, it doesn't even matter.
For example, if somebody acts immature, you can assume that they're a kid, but you'll probably never truly know.

The bottom line is that these are cartoons, played by real people that you've probably never met. Age is only a number, and believe me, there are plenty of people from every age group playing this game. You're not the only one.
Quitting Pirates is entirely up to you, but I wouldn't recommend it. Like I said, if you enjoy playing the game, you're just fine. People who seem to treat you differently because of age should just be ignored.

The one and only time I was suspended, I was suspended for giving PI, and my friend who received it all, even asked for it, remained playing. This is when I had very indepth dicussion on the matter with their customer service manager on the subject. Their explanation was... they were protecting me. Then to show you how much they believe in what they do... the manager told me to create another account and go play (to circumvent the ban). Moral of the story, they suspend those that give the PI, not those that ask for it.

POTCO is a family environment, and caters to all ages. Friends and players in the game share their age groups regularly and are not at all "wierdos".

There was in fact a survey at one point - I don't remember if it was on here or on the Disney site, but it did exist, and there were far more people answering that POTCO is played more by adults.

Is this accurate? Who knows. It would be nearly impossible to get a realistic idea of player ages from an internet survey.

Even if Disney revealed an adult/kid ratio based on their information, it probably wouldn't be accurate - there's no telling how many people entered incorrect information when registering.

Adults are generally drawn to play with adults. Kids are generally drawn to play with kids. Adults think there are more adults, kids think there are more kids - I think, judging by the posts here, it's pretty safe to say that whoever someone associates with most in the game, that's who they believe makes up the majority of players.

That could be true. I find that adults tend to offer conversation more in the game which could be why I meet far more adults in the game than the younger set. Not people I play with mind you, just those that I meet .. just passers by. The few young players I know/play with you have to pry information out of.. because they dont want to type!
By information I mean.... what quest are you on, what items do you need? etc.

wulfric 05-04-2009 12:23 PM

I'm a pirate whats got kids, too. My boy plays sometimes and even my little girl, but mostly she likes to make the pirates run around and jump in the water. So its sort of a family thing.

I'm a pirate with a wee kindergarten tot what plays pirates with me, a young pirate in college, a couple of'em in High School and Jr. high, and me first granddaughter pirate was born last month. I be too young to give up games I enjoy! Arrrr! It's a pirate's life fer me.

Tuefenhandel 05-04-2009 04:45 PM

I heard someone say, a long time ago, that you're only young once - but you can be immature forever!

My daughter got me hooked on POTCO, although she has long since flexed her mighty pre-teen lack of attention span and moved on, and on, and on to other pursuits.

mlratto 05-04-2009 06:10 PM

My daughter got me hooked on POTCO

Same here...my son got me hooked about a year and half ago...or more. His pirate is still at level 15 and i have fully mastered 2 pirates and am working on a third.

I honestly have no idea what the kid to adult ratio is. My guild is all adult and that is primarily who i interact with. I usually go to a quite server so i rarely interact with other pirates other than my guild.

it's only when i want to SvS that i go to a busy server and interact with players of all ages. some younger kids are great...others are well, kids!

umelt 05-05-2009 02:12 PM

Age is just a number. I'm old enough to have have a very adult son. I have enjoyed playing the game for a couple of years now and have met some very interesting people. I do find some of the general chat to be very immature, but I have become quite good at ignoring it. If one has a good time with the game it certainly doesn't matter when they were born. Sail on mates!

Captain Seaford 05-08-2009 03:19 AM

I've seen many adults in the Caribbean. Although I am a teen myself :D

Lisa Heartbreaker 05-08-2009 09:58 PM

:mickeypiratezd4: Thank you to everyone, who responded to my post. In the past 6 days, since I composed the first entry to this thread, I have been visiting the Caribbean quite a bit. I went from notoriety 17 to a 22. This morning, I finally unlocked my grenade weaponry. I have met a lot of adults, although, I do enjoy playing with the various age groups. I like this game very much. The outfits are so cool! :) One thing I have discovered is, I am enjoying this game at the moment, more than Toontown. I think my trolley riding days, and usage of bike horns are on hold for now. However, I still intend to keep my toons, and accounts active, just in case, Disney will create a new headquarters in the future. I love the pirate life. Lisa Heartbreaker will be navigating around the oceans, and on the islands for the next year, or so.

Looking forward to seeing all of you, in the pirate world!

May all o' ye 'ave an awesome weekend. Happy Mother's Day t' all th' pirate Moms.
:)

jennabellie 05-12-2009 05:45 AM

both me and my boyfriend play pirates and we're both adults. we love the game. we also were playing toontown but we're taking a break from that for the time being. most of the people i socialize with on both games are adults. i think it's an even mixture of kids and adults, maybe a tad more on the adult side. i think if you like a game, no matter what the common age of the person that plays is, then you should play it. like someone else said, age is nothing but a number. play what you think is fun to play.

Jack Sunskull 05-12-2009 12:35 PM

I am an adult and I'll probably be playing video games until the day I die, it's just part of what I grew up with. So no one is ever to old to play pirates or any other game.

Eliza Creststeel 05-12-2009 03:39 PM

I'm an old codger myself. Originally, I thought my oldest may like it and I was a fan of the movies. He actually prefers the Club Penguin game for socializing and I've been playing since January 2008.

Li Wildtimbers 05-12-2009 04:58 PM

aye pirates not only for the younger kids but for the big kids as well (lol arent we all though). I be an adult who enjoys the game just as much as the next does. Glad to see ya playing.

Old, old as the Hills

Old, old as the hills,
When me fingers hurt I takes me pills,
I am seldomly heard,
giving an encouraging word,
Cuz I’m curmudgeonly and angry all day!

Old, old as the hills,
Yet pirates I still play with skills,
Most of me hair may be gone,
and what’s left is gray,
But without pirates you’d best stay out of me way!

Darthdavy 05-13-2009 02:36 AM

not uncommon at all to run into some adult pirates...I know some pirates whos ages are 44 and 43.

deepirategirl 05-29-2009 03:55 AM

I'm an adult! I don't think age really matters. I feel better though knowing I am not the only adult here.

combatlizzy 05-29-2009 07:45 PM

Someone hand me my walker...so's I can get to the puter to play me POTCO! It's all in how ya think & what you enjoy! Now where are me bi-focals????
