Why is the game so laggy for me?

Why is the game so very lagy for me. It literally took me 40 min. to make my character and idk if i wa sable to see all the options for character design hah. Any help?

Captain 11-01-2007 10:40 PM

Your computer might just stink. But the game has been a little laggy for the last while; all the new people coming in (like you, I see). But no big problems like yours, so it's entirely possible that your computer just stinks.

Happens to me too. Try to just have only Pirates up or virus scan your computer

My computer onced lagged so bad from viruses that I can't do anything with my toon when I brought it up.

robaroo 11-02-2007 12:49 AM

Like this for most. Id exspect it to stay like this for the next week so. Give people time to settle in and spread out a bit :)

Peggo 11-02-2007 01:22 AM

The game sometimes lags for me, but it's so much better than it used to be. Of course I upgraded my computer lately so maybe that helped too.
The problem I have these days is the constant crashing out of the game, or them closing the district. So frustrating.
I'm talking about the Test Server by the way. The pay game I don't know about.

Luis 11-02-2007 02:09 AM

Yeah it lags for me as well. So, your not alone. I don't know if its the computer or the actual severs. :) The world will never know ;)

Yesterday it was pretty bad. But today it seems fine.

Davy Redfish 11-02-2007 04:44 PM

I have the same problem, Braodband connection, 64meg video card and 1 gig memory on my laptop, and a 128meg video card with 512 ram on my desktop.

The game is basically unplayable for me on both of my machines, and this is even with all graphics an display settings set to there minimum (which I should not have to do given my machine's hardware).

I have waited a over Year for this release, and now I can't play. Load screens take over a minute to load, running and sailing are next to impossible, and battles forget about it.

I know this has only gone live this week and that there will be hiccups along the way but I am very frustrated at this point.

I have even tried to log in in the middile of the night (less people online all oceans quite) and it makes no difference.

Don't get me wrong I love the game and think that it will be a game for the ages, but I have been itching to play for so long I was hoping for more.

Sorry for the rant I am just very frustrated.

The_Farmer 11-02-2007 05:38 PM

No worries, mate!

Keep in mind this is a newer game, and would often have a hard time on older computers. It's graphics are some of the latest, and it takes an awful lot from your computer. Your computer may just have to adjust to this game and get used to this hard-core stuff on your computer.

I'd check your computer for most of the newest updates, clear my cookies, and make sure I have alot of Megabytes.

Plunderin Mom 11-02-2007 05:56 PM

Yep, laggy for me, too, even on our good gaming PC. I have to restart every couple of hours or it gets so bad I can't even run a straight line through town. It's even worse on the other PC and impossible to gun on that one. Like someone previously mentioned, it doesnt even matter whether you're in an ocean thats quiet, with few or no other players. Its still lags.

I didnt have the problems with lag on test that I do on open, and a friend of mine can do little more than play poker, now, whereas he played all aspects of the game with little trouble on test. Not sure what the POTC people can do, and I dont know anything that relates to computers technically, but if we didnt have this much lag on test, then there must be something they can do, and its not just a graphics issue, I wouldnt think.

The test servers have less people, therefore less of a lag. I'd play on test if I were you for now.

There is a possibility that Disney hasn't updated it yet to fix the bugs and lags that you guys are experiancing. Of course, that's unlike Disney, but, they may want to keep it open for the newcomers without shutting it down like they do to Toontown. :dancetl6:

Davy Redfish 11-02-2007 07:44 PM

Sounds like I am not alone

Well given the responses it seems as I am not alone. I do Play Toontown and it has lag now and then and requires a reboot every couple of hours, but nothing like this.

I will try and be patiant and hopefully after the masses migrate into the game they will be able to do something about it.

I Chatted with tech support about it yesterday and the person I was speaking with examined my bug report and said that from what he could see it was not on my end.

Well, my PC is good too (I used to run higher end games like Oblivion no problem, with settings that I was comfortable with) and I still get lag. It's half game, half machine. The game SAYS it requires 800mhz processors; I have a 3ghz processor and it says the game takes up 100% of my CPU processing power. So, it is the game, something about it really eats up your machine. Give it time, I think Disney may find a fix for it. Make sure your PC is updated, try to end some processes that you aren't using in the Task Manager, and that may help. If it doesn't, well, I'm sorry. That's all I've got.

It's the dumb flash player ads that make the game run slower than molasses going uphill in a blizzard! I can tell because If I right-click the flash player ads and set their quality to Low the game speeds up significantly. I am running on an acer 9300 laptop with a 1.6 GHz Turion 64 X2 so I have the CPU power down pat.

This is 100% correct!
If u upgrade the game is VERY fast!
I am on a "ok" gaming computer and it works fine on unlimited,
they need the game by doing what they did with toon town 3 days free not all features.
The ads ruin the game from what I remember from (Phase 1)
They will probably fix this...

If they would use animated gifs instead of flash player there wouldn't be such a problem!

The biggest offender is the snow effect on the Pokemon ad. Funny that Disney would have Pokemon sponsored, I think.

thebeez 11-03-2007 08:34 PM

Memory, memory, memory. Doesn't matter how fast your processor is, if you have less that 1G memory on XP or 2G on Vista forget it. We are running 3 Laptops at a time over a wireless g/broadband connection. The 2 with XP and 1.5 G memory work great, the one with Vista and 1 G was super laggy until we added another 1G stick to it. None of them have a processor faster than 1.7ghz and all have integrated graphics chips. We do try to play on quiet districts though and can immediately tell if a system scan or windows update kicks in while we are playing.

It is so easy to add memory and if you order it straight from Edge or one of the online stores it's not very expensive. Not just POTCO but everything runs smoother.:12_1_138:

MariaSeaMorgan85 11-04-2007 03:00 AM

I would have to agree- you can have the fastest processor in the world but if you don't have at least a gig of ram (2 is way better) and an SSD hard drive it won't mean squat.
Although, I have to say that pirates runs a lot better and smoother on my vista then on my XP.
A couple of things to keep in mind:
1. Close all processes that you aren't using (sidebars, search engines, virus scan, etc.) they use loads of RAM and even if you have plenty of it, the more programs open the less RAM that gets used for your game.
2. Are your drivers updated? Check your manufacturers sites to make sure you are using the latest software.
3. Serious lag when playing in full window? Try playing in a smaller window. It may not be as pretty to look at, but it will save you frustration!

See you on the Seas!

I have TWO Gigabytes of RAM in my laptop! I think I have that part squared away! It uses just over half of it when running. Also, with dual cores, all the "other" processes move to the other core while the game hogs one core. Dual core does make a difference, and in fact, at times I couldn't tell if Norton AV was running its virus scan until I closed the game(s) and noticed it running. Since my dual core has one core pegged at 100% with pirates being the offending task I think it has to do with something hogging CPU power. I know it's the ads because the lag changes with the ad displayed. It almost halts the game when the Pokemon Diamond/Perl Christmas (with the falling snow effect) ad comes on, but the Pirates ad does not hit as hard. If I right-click the ad(s) and choose "Low" quality the game speeds up a lot, only to slow down once the ad(s) refresh. So every minute I am right-clicking the ads and choosing "Low" quality. I'm NOT buying something if they won't show the demo like it's supposed to run. The whole point of the demo is to WOW you on the game, but limit your ability to advance far until you pay up. This is not WOWing me at all. It's just annoying me on poor planning. Again.

Captain 11-04-2007 04:57 AM

It's still ad-supported for the free version? LOL... poor people who don't pay...

Plo Koon 11-04-2007 07:51 AM

being a video game designer. THE PROBLEM IS THAT POTCO RUSHED THEIR RELEASE!

This game is in no way ready to be released. The game will be faster when potco developers decide to buy a faster server, simple as that- Not to mention this game has MORE bugs than before... Dios mio...

Tinabula The Brave 04-29-2008 06:19 PM

I would have to agree with this. And I wish Disney would upgrade something and stop suggestiong that players over upgrade their machines to play. I have a system that can play games, online and not, that require much more graphical muscle than this game...and run much better at that. The problem isn't my machine, or many other peoples machines...it's the game. It's not the amount of players around either, as has been suggested...I can be on an absolutely dead server, not another ship in sight for sometimes hours on end...empty towns...and sure as heck, after a relatively short period of time, the game is chugging so bad, it becomes absolutely unplayable. Only thing worse than the lag issues are the complete lack of feedback from Disney.

Do they even look at these forums I wonder?

I would have thought that such a HUGE money making company would have better servers or better net-code or whatever their problem is.

Asking players to shut the game off every half hour or so is equally obsurd.

I love the game...it's the horrible lag that is driving me to abandon it.

Please fix this Disney! I don't want to leave.

dangerousden 04-30-2008 01:10 PM

I am so sick of Disney Support telling me to update my Grahpics drivers. I HAVE THE LATEST VERSION!!! My Vista laptop (Dual Core 1.8ghz with 3gb RAM and a dedicated 128mb GPU) runs PoTCO with next to no lag. I only notice a slowdown late in the day on a weekend.

The test server never lags, but then again I rarely see anyone else on there :)

Still lots of bugs, but in general I would say RAM RAM RAM, and a decent graphics card is what is required.

Disney will eventually get round to optimising the code for this Game. My other online pirate game has just had the code optimised and the game was so much better and no server upgrades required.

gatechgal 04-30-2008 03:09 PM

Where I have lag problems is when I board enemy ships. Then my player moves so slow that I get killed a lot.

Angel 04-30-2008 08:55 PM

Ive noticed extreme lag when I board too. However I have noticed bad lag lately....gonna talk with live chat now....

Eustace the Monk 04-30-2008 09:24 PM

On the opposite side of the spectrum, I have almost never experienced lag in the game, unless the Mem usage clears 600M, or on a full server. Maybe I should open a support ticket with something like: My PC doesn't seem to be lagging as much as everyone else's. Is there something I can do to fix this? I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, but it is definately playable like this. Please Help!

Loot Hard!
