Pottermore

"Pottermore is an exciting new experience from J.K. Rowling based around the Harry Potter books. It is FREE to join and use, and is designed to be safe for people of all ages." Users will be sorted into Houses, receive wands, and can unlock certain bits of information.

For the next seven days, from July 31st to August 6th (day 1 of registration is now closed), a clue will be posted on the Pottermore front page -- answer correctly (and quickly), and you'll gain early access to Pottermore. Each clue will relate to a different book in the HP series (for example, the clue for day 1 [today] was related to Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone - the first book). Pottermore will open to the public in October. More information on early access and clues can be found on the Pottermore Insider blog.

EDIT: The beta is now over, and Pottermore is now open to the public. Students can currently explore Book 1 and four chapters of Book 2.

Spoiler for Potion Ingredients and Locations:

Sounds confusing what exactly is it? A mmo? Or just a forums website? I'm confused...

Crestshot 08-01-2011 07:39 AM

I got in. Hellooooo JK Rowling. I think it's essentially a site where JK Rowling starts posting the little details that only the author knows about the story, and where the fans get to ask their questions more directly.
http://i54.tinypic.com/ngzhug.jpg

Marry The Night 08-01-2011 08:16 AM

It's kind of like a companion to the Harry Potter books. You get to read parts of chapters (or even full chapters, not sure yet) from the books, and find bits of background information. That's all we really know for now, but there's bound to be more than just that. For example:

As you can see, you can add other people as friends, collect potions and spells (not sure what you can do with them yet), go to your common room, etc.

Chris Ironhawk 08-01-2011 11:11 AM

Pip pip, mates! If you happen to be online right now, then GET TO POTTERMORE! THE CLUE IS UP! (As of 2 AM PST)...

I got in... Will you? o.o

akamystic 08-01-2011 02:17 PM

Thanks for sharing! I am a HUGE Harry Potter fan. I think the last movie was awesome. Saw it in IMAX 3D. I read the books so this new web site may tie in some of the loose ends.

I was always curious if J.K. Rowling had some scripts for prequels. She could easily make another 4-5 movies that cover Harry's parents as kids, Snape growing up, Tom Riddle becoming corrupt.....etc. Not sure if she has considered it....but I bet some fans have already asked.

Crestshot 08-01-2011 07:31 PM

I bet some fans have already written it themselves. :laughks2: The second clue came out last night, this one being "In which chapter did Professor McGonagall cancel the Quidditch match between Hufflepuff and Gryffindor? Multiply this answer by 42." Talk about a crazed frenzy to look for the right chapter... and then it turns out the link to the American version didn't even work properly! It kept freezing and the screen wouldn't come up completely. We had to go to the German version of the site instead! It all worked in the end. If you want early access for Pottermore, better get out there and find that feather, mates!

It is actaully a Magical Quill. ;)

Marry The Night 08-02-2011 03:32 AM

BTW, for those who want to get in, the third clue will be posted between 9:00am and 1:00pm BST. That's 4:00am - 8:00am Eastern, 3:00am - 7:00am Central, 2:00am - 5:00am Mountain, and 1:00am - 4:00am Pacific. If it helps, the clues are posted on the hour.

akamystic 08-03-2011 04:01 PM

Day 4 clue is live. Easy clue.....I just got in. Woo Hoo!

The site was only open for about 20 minutes to pre-register. You still have 3 days left to try getting in....if you can solve the clue that is.

Dark_Pixie 08-03-2011 07:23 PM

Hey everyone, is it worth signing up early, despite never reading a Harry Potter book and only seeing the first two films? :P Then I could say that I'd got into Pottermore when it began... and I am hoping to get into the books at some point.

I probably won't be able to answer the clue, for the above reason, but is it worth a look?

akamystic 08-03-2011 07:30 PM

Being the huge fan that I am.....I must answer yes.......you have nothing to lose. It's also free.

Dark_Pixie 08-03-2011 07:33 PM

Okay, thanks. :) I'll check it out tomorrow.

Crestshot 08-03-2011 07:34 PM

What was the 4th day clue, Aka? I know that the 3rd was
Quote:

In the Gryffindor versus Slytherin Quidditch match, in Harry's third year, how many points is Gryffindor leading by before Harry catches the Golden Snitch?
Multiply this number by 35.
And yah, DP, I'd say get on, just for the heck of it.

akamystic 08-03-2011 07:47 PM

How many students were in the Triwizard Tournament? Answer (4) multiplied by 28 and added to the end of a URL to get to early sign up page.

Captian Blimey John 08-03-2011 08:44 PM

I say. A Harry Potter MMO? Kudos to Rowling for being able to continue capitalizing on the series, but I'm not thinking of playing it until I see some gameplay.

Could you imagine a Harry Potter MMO? Whoa........

Marry The Night 08-04-2011 11:20 PM

For anyone who hasn't gotten in yet: the clue for Day 6 will be released between 1:30pm and 4.00pm BST tomorrow, and the final clue (Day 7) will be released between 12:30am and 3:00am BST on Saturday, August 6th. That's 8:30 AM EDT to 11:00 AM EDT for Day 6, and 7:30 PM EDT to 10:00 PM EDT for Day 7. Good luck! :D

Edit #2: Pottermore was previewed at LeakyCon; here's some (quite detailed) information on Pottermore. It's pretty long, so I'm putting this in a spoilertab too.

Spoiler for Pottermore Info:

"It all starts with your registration. You fill out some information to begin, and the next page will tell you if you are indeed magical. It will then let you choose from 5 different usernames. They don’t allow you to make up your own username for child safety reasons. You then get sorted into your house by some dirty old hat. There is a large pool of questions that Rowling, herself, wrote, that will determine your house. Once you are sorted into either Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, or Slytherin, you will get a good page or two of brand new information about the history of your house.

Your homepage branches out into the seven books and includes décor befitting of your house. When you begin a book, it shows each chapter as a dot on that branch. While you are reading the book, there are interactive illustrations and animations that go along with the story. Each illustration was painstakingly designed directly from the books with every detail ever mentioned in them. They then had to be approved by Rowling and touched up until they were just how she had imagined them.

As you read, you “discover” new content. We got a sneak-peek at the history of Uncle Vernon and Aunt Petunia. The page that we saw explained how they were named, and also how they met and fell in love, etc. We also saw a bit of background on Professor McGonagall, which involved a somewhat tragic childhood and a muggle…

Going through the books in this way, you can also turn on lights, collect items and objects, and you also have money. You have a virtual bank account in Gringotts. You need this money because you will need to buy all of your schoolbooks and supplies from Diagon Alley. You can buy your own pet to take to school, but the first thing to get is of course, your wand. In Ollivander’s, you will be chosen by one of a possible 33,000 different wand combinations, after all, “the wand chooses the wizard.”

You then arrive at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft & Wizardry. In your menu you will find your Favorites, Friends, Illustrations, Spells, Potions and Trunk. Your house common room is a sort of chat room, and also has your points for wizard dueling among a few other things. The Great Hall is nearly the same as the common rooms, but it also includes all of the house points and updates from everyone. While you can invite friends to share this experience with you, POTTERMORE is not trying to be [the censored social site], and I don’t think it will ever be near as obnoxious.

For the first time, you will be able to purchase e-books and the digital audio book versions of the series. It looks like the e-books are styled after the new Bloomsbury Signature collection of Harry Potter.

There will be no fan-fiction on this site.

“It is not an encyclopedia, although much of the content is encyclopedic in nature,” whatever that’s supposed to mean.. It will be launched in English, French, Italian, German, and Spanish, with Japanese soon to come. It will begin a beta phase on July 31st to a lucky one million, and the official launch will be in October. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone will be the only book available in October, with Chamber of Secrets to come early 2012. You can enter your email on www.pottermore.com to receive updates and learn how to qualify for beta testing.

J.K. Rowling wants the readers to know that she will be updating and contributing to her newest baby, POTTERMORE, for as long as she has breath, more or less. Most importantly, POTTERMORE will be FREE forever."

jason davy 08-05-2011 02:44 AM

Most frustrating thing ever. I know the clues are only up for less than half an hour and they have all been up at terrible times for me- but today I just happened to check the site at work at the right time, solved the clue (no. 12 Grimmauld Place multiplied by 21) and tried to add it after the web address...in Explorer it redirected me to the Scholastic site and in Safari it said the address couldn't be found. Is this a junky work computer problem or has anyone else experienced something similar?? By the time I quit fooling with it and phoned a friend to register for me from home, registration was closed. Bah humbug.

Crestshot 08-05-2011 02:54 AM

It was confusing to me at first as well, but you had to find the quill on the scholastic site. With each clue, the user has been redirected to a different site; one night it was Sony, the next the Warner Bros. website, etc. Just a hint for if you try it again tomorrow.

jason davy 08-05-2011 02:58 AM

So you have to browse around on the site it directs you to in order to find the quill and THEN it lets you register? Wish they had made that more clear. Thanks Crestshot. Maybe I'll be able to try it again Saturday.

Marry The Night 08-05-2011 03:01 AM

Yes, from what I've heard, this has happened with yesterday's site as well. All I can say is, try for tomorrow's clue or the last clue. The clue for Day 6 (tomorrow) will be posted between 8:30 AM EDT to 11:00 AM EDT, and the clue for Day 7 will be posted between 7:30 PM EDT to 10:00 PM EDT -- turns out that's today, not Saturday. Sorry!

Marry The Night 08-06-2011 04:32 PM

(Pretty sure it's safe to double-post; it's been more than 24 hours since my last post...)

Early access to Pottermore is now closed -- Welcome emails start going out tonight!

Chris Ironhawk 08-06-2011 07:33 PM

You can expect me to overload Yahoo's servers by refreshing my email inbox like a mad man tonight! :P

The site has gone back to normal (pre-Magical Quill challenge) now; you can register your email and you'll get an email when Pottermore opens to the public. Curious, though -- the sign in button is gone. And when I enter the URL to the sign in page, it says that the page has "vanished." Hmm...

akamystic 08-11-2011 01:27 PM

I got in early and activated my account. However, now waiting once again for another email allowing access to the site. Hopefully soon.....or what was the point of signing up early? ?? Unless it was just for hype.....

Crestshot 08-11-2011 08:11 PM

After lurking around some other places, I inferred that Pottermore WAS supposed to be sending out the welcome letters right after the Magic Quill ended. However, due to the London Riots, which just so happen to be in the area of the home base, they were unable to do so. Now rumor has it that the welcome emails are going out from August 15th on.

akamystic 08-11-2011 08:23 PM

I just received the below email:

You have been selected for early entry into Pottermore!

We’re really excited to confirm that you are one of the lucky people selected for early entry into Pottermore, ahead of when it is open-to-all in October, to help us add finishing touches!

We will activate your account between mid-August and the end of September, so keep checking your inbox for our Welcome email.

When this arrives you will be able to enter Pottermore. In the meantime, you can check the Pottermore Insider for all the latest news, updates and announcements.

We look forward to welcoming you to Pottermore.

Crestshot 08-11-2011 09:00 PM

Aye, they've been sending those out the past day or so it seems. I think it's just something to say "Don't worry, we haven't forgotten about you! Your account is still intact!" At this point, I'm holding onto the rumor of August 15th being when they really get up and going.

Marry The Night 08-12-2011 01:19 AM

Got my email yesterday, around noon. These emails were, from what I've seen, sent out randomly if you're under 13, and by the day you registered if you're over 13. Hopefully they do this with account activation, as I registered on Day 1. :D

As for August 15, that sounds about right for Welcome letters, since the Congratulations letter says "mid-August."

Not many people have noticed this, but J.K. Rowling's signature is in the bottom-right corner of the gate. ;)

Also, according to the French "Congratulations" email, Welcome letters will be sent out starting August 15th. So if you're in, expect your Pottermore account to be activated very soon! I'll probably be up all night Sunday waiting for mine. :laughks2:

Marry The Night 08-16-2011 05:09 PM

Welcome letters are going out, and accounts are being activated! The first batch went out at about 9 AM CDT yesterday morning, and the second batch at 1:30 AM CDT today. This could mean that Welcome letters are being sent out every 12 or so hours, rather than once every day.

I got my letter during the second batch; here's a screenshot:

akamystic 08-16-2011 07:56 PM

@Marry ........(stares in awe)......

Marry The Night 08-19-2011 04:16 PM

Another two batches of Welcome emails have been sent out over the past 24 hours! The Pottermore Insider will update their blog each time a new wave of emails has been sent out.

Didn't notice this comment until now; I stayed up all night to register on Day 1 and yes, in my opinion, it's completely worth it. Story-wise there isn't much information, so you'll have to read the books along with it, but there's a ton of new content that wasn't in the books. And it's not just reading; there are also mini-games, like Wizard Duelling and Potion Brewing -- both of which are very fun and addicting (although it takes a long time for potions to brew). You also get your own wand, pet, Gringotts bank account, and get sorted into a House.

I was sorted into Slytherin, the pet I bought was a Ginger Cat, and my wand is: Hornbeam, 13 1/2", Unicorn core, pliant. :)

Actually, Ravenclaw has the most with 22,469 students. Gryffindor is third for most students, with 21,718 -- that's less than Hufflepuff (21,803). Slytherin has the least amount of students with 21,461.

No. The Sorting Hat's decision is final. As Crest said, you'd have to delete your account and try again. Although, I don't recommend it; in my opinion, that's just as bad as trying to cheat on the Sorting Hat's quiz. It takes away some of the fun and you won't be sorted into the house that you truly belong in.

fbdude 08-27-2011 10:58 PM

Signed up on Question 3 thanks to a friend. Still waiting for welcome email.

Marry The Night 09-02-2011 11:59 PM

A new batch of emails was sent out today! So far three other guildies has gotten their Welcome emails this week. Also, I don't think we're allowed to post screenshots of Pottermore, otherwise I'd be taking loads of screens and posting them here. However, this was posted on the official Pottermore blog, so it's safe to post it here.

Spoiler for Pottermore Potion Making:
http://i769.photobucket.com/albums/x...us/potions.png

This shows a bit of how potions are brewed in Pottermore. After you've followed the recipe, you wave your wand to start brewing the potion. However, if you didn't follow the recipe precisely, the cauldron starts fuming green smoke, and you may be awarded one house point. There's a chance, however, that your cauldron may explode if you don't follow the recipe precisely. Not only will you need to purchase a new cauldron, but you'll also lose five house points. Follow the recipe correctly and you'll earn five house points.

I must say, when I got in to Pottermore I could practically sit down in my seat long enough to press the button to take me to the site. The fact that I got a pretty rare wand as my own just added to the excitement!

Though I must say, my sorting ceremony was a bit of a shock for everybody, myself included. I always considered myself to be a Gryffindor, but apparently Miss Rowling thought different, and decided to place me in none other than Slytherin. But, I'm not gonna complain - I like being a bad kid :psmiley35:

I would advise against posting screenshots of Pottermore. Doing so would violate Pottermore's terms and agreements, and you could risk losing your account. I have, however, posted a few official screenshots sent to the press, used for promotional purposes. They can be found here and here.

The millionth Welcome email has been sent out today. Don't get your hopes up for Pottermore opening to the public this Saturday (October 1st). That date is just a rumour and hasn't been confirmed; Pottermore could open to the public at any day in October. (I personally think it could open on Halloween, as that's a Monday. Don't quote me on that, though.)

"Overwhelming demand" means that there is a lot of traffic on the site, and they'll redirect you to the site after it's cooled down a bit.

Marry The Night 12-14-2011 01:28 AM

Haven't updated this in a while, but open registration for Pottermore has been pushed back a bit. No word on when it will open to the public, unfortunately.

On the bright side (for beta testers, at least), Wizard Duelling is back up after it's four month-long hiatus. There's currently a limit of ten duels per twenty minutes. :degen:

HammyTheSquirrel 02-24-2012 04:53 AM

We know that the extended wait for those wishing to be part of Pottermore has been frustrating, and we’d like to thank you all for your patience so far.

Many of you are interested to know why we extended the original opening date beyond October of last year.

We always knew Pottermore would be incredibly popular, which is why we made the decision to only open to one million Beta users to begin with. We wanted to make sure that we had a really good understanding of how people want to use the site and which bits we’d need to modify before giving more people access.

We gathered some incredibly useful feedback from our Beta users, and it became clear that our original platform wouldn’t be suitable when millions more users came on to the site. So we made a big decision: to move Pottermore to an entirely different platform set up. This ‘invisible’ change has involved a lot of work behind the scenes but it will enable our users to get the best from Pottermore as it grows and develops.

There have definitely been some challenges and the whole Pottermore team has been working really hard to incorporate all the Beta activity and feedback. This means that over the coming weeks and months we’ll be adding exclusive content and many more exciting features (such as sounds) to Pottermore for you to explore, share and discover.

So get ready to join the Pottermore journey – the wait is nearly over.

Perfect timing for me... I'm just starting The Deathly Hallows. :laughks2: I'm pretty excited for it to open. It looks pretty cool.

Davy_Mcwrecker 03-10-2012 08:47 PM

Tsk, Tsk, J.K. Rowling. By the time Pottermore is out, A Hunger Games game will come out and less people will join. I honestly don't want to play anymore. :(

Marry The Night 03-11-2012 12:42 AM

Hopefully they're going to add more ways to earn Galleons. That's currently an issue with the beta: You get 500 Galleons at the start of each book, but there aren't any ways to replenish it. Avid potion makers, like myself, have run out of money for ingredients a long time ago.

Is this a good sign of the release?

If it actually opens today, I have some crazy psychic powers. I just had a feeling it would... :laughks2:

Anyway... I sure hope it does open today. :D I'm curious to see which house I'll be in. (crosses fingers and prays for Ravenclaw) ^_^

HammyTheSquirrel 04-14-2012 08:59 PM

Pottermore is open! :D

Marry The Night 04-14-2012 09:05 PM

Pottermore's finally open! The number of people who can register per hour is being limited, and when you do register you won't gain access right away; they're activating users in a steady stream due to the overwhelming amount of applicants.

Also, we are allowed to share our Pottermore usernames on POF; Savvy checked with Batleth back when Pottermore first opened to beta testers.

Captain Gas 04-16-2012 12:00 AM

Sweet! My username is FangPatronus10705. Haven't been sent the e-mail for exploring yet, but got an account. See you in the game!

They gave me the username FangPatronus, and I chose it because my favorite spell is the Patronus. :P

HammyTheSquirrel 04-16-2012 12:15 AM

My username is NoxKnight8400, for whoever would like to add me. ;)

Marry The Night 04-16-2012 05:59 AM

Added you both -- I'm AurorFlame70. :)

Tia 04-16-2012 06:17 AM

I just joined today and am on chapter 3. My name on there is HexStrike26329. Add me if you'd like!

Marry The Night 04-17-2012 01:00 AM

Some tips for those who are just now joining:
  • If you're in Ravenclaw, don't duel Slytherins, and vice versa. Ravenclaw and Slytherin are battling for the house cup, so if you're in either house and you lose to the opposing house, you're giving the opposing house points.
  • If you plan on getting into dueling, make sure you find Curses and Counter-Curses before you get started. This book contains powerful spells that are used by most hardcore duelers, such as the Full Body-Bind and the Tongue-Tying Spell. The Knockback Jinx is good for starters, but it's not strong enough to defend you from the more avid duelers.
  • Potions can be fun to make, and are a great way to earn a lot of house points. But be careful when you're buying ingredients, as you're only given 500 Galleons and there's no way to replenish that amount.
  • Never, ever, cheat your way into a house. The sorting quiz in Pottermore was designed by J.K. Rowling herself and is the most accurate sorting test there is. You may think you belong to one house, when really you belong in another. Wherever you're placed is where you're supposed to be.

Kale Grayhand 04-17-2012 10:57 PM

I joined recently and got sorted into Ravenclaw. My username is MarauderNight16458.

J.T. 04-18-2012 02:56 AM

I decided to check this it. Got Gryffindor ( kinda wanted Raven Claw :piratetongueor4: ). User is FlameFirebolt22421.

Captain Gas 04-19-2012 11:56 PM

I got sorted into Gryffindor (yay!) and I'm doing potions. I'm confused. When they say to wave your wand, what do they mean?

Yeah... took me a few tries to find my wand. o_O Your wand is sitting behind the ingredients, and when you click it, it sort of does its own thing. ;)

YewStone28831 That's me! :D

I'm NoxKnight8400, and you should know my POTCO name... *points to signature* :)

Tia 04-21-2012 04:39 AM

I would be able to see your signature if I wasn't always using the forums on my iPod xD but I'll switch to the normal view and look at it :)

Edit; the forums work fine non mobile so I'll use it that way now :P and Hammy, I nicknamed you

Looks like the first Pottermore House Cup will be awarded soon!

Click the image to view the full version

Yesterday when I checked the scores, Gryffindor was in the lead with Slytherin in second place. Thankfully, that's changed; Slytherin is now ahead of Gryffindor by approximately 17,000 points. This makes me happy because, as few of you may know, I'm really not fond of the students in Gryffindor. I know all of you Gryffindors on here are nice, but I've had some pretty bad experiences with some of the others in the past. Let's just say that during the beta, they weren't exactly happy that Gryffindor was in third place; so they were just generally rude to Slytherins and obtained their house points in a questionable manner. ;)

WeirdBeard 06-22-2012 04:01 PM

I am in pottermore now! I am PhoenixJinx29813

Marry The Night 07-01-2012 05:55 PM

Update on the House Cup and Scores:

While the scores and hourglasses have been covered on the site, it is still possible to see the scores by other means.

Because Pottermore has covered the scores, many people thought that they were going to throw the competition and let Gryffindor win. This, it seems, has caused Gryffindors to become very complacent. Slytherin currently has an approximately 100,000 point lead over Gryffindor. With only a little over three days left until the House Cup is awarded, I don't think Gryffindor has enough time to catch up and reclaim the lead.

Captain Gas 07-02-2012 04:07 PM

All right, well I finally got the hang of potions and I love it now. From now on, every potion I brew, will be sent to one of my Pottermore friends. If ye want in, my name is FangPatronus10705!

Dark_Pixie 07-02-2012 07:35 PM

I finally joined a few days ago! My username is IceThorn29268.

Captain Gas 07-02-2012 10:03 PM

I honestly think the hardest potion to brew is Sleeping Draught, especially during the heating part. I managed to make it, though, and it is currently brewing. I'll edit when it's finished and someone will get sent the potion.

Marry The Night 07-05-2012 08:27 AM

And the winner of the inaugural Pottermore House Cup is...

Congrats everyone! :buds:

HammyTheSquirrel 07-05-2012 02:22 PM

*hisses* Still, congrats to Slytherin anyways! :D

Davy_Mcwrecker 07-05-2012 05:53 PM

Hopefully I'll get in Ravenclaw - But I'll take anything but Hufflepuff.

UPDATE: I just got my wand: Elder w/ Dragon Core, 13 Inches, Hard.

^Is that a good wand?

UPDATE 2: I was just put in Slytherin. Well, at least I'm with the majority of you guys (PNC)!

There are no good or bad wands. Whatever wand you get is the one that's supposed to fit you most.

Davy_Mcwrecker 07-05-2012 09:50 PM

Does the wand affect anything, or is it just something for you to say your wand is?

Nah, doesn't affect anything at all. The wand is just yours, but it is what your wand should be.

Actually... This is still being looked into, but I think there technically are "good" and "bad" wands -- but this only truly matters if you're going to become an avid duelist. It seems that certain combinations of wood, core, and possibly length, make for a strong duelling wand or a weak one. For example, there are people who can score as high as 160 points with a Full-Body Bind, and others who can only score somewhere in the 120-range.
