High Seas Problem

I seem to be unable to visit the High Seas. Every time I do, I get the generic Windows XP "This program needs to close. Sucks to be you." message. I've done it on an ideal server, I've done it on a quiet server, I've done with my graphics high, I've done it with my graphics low. I've tried it launching my own ship, and tried getting on someone else's. Two times, randomly, I got a message in game saying that my connection was suddenly broken, before crashing to the desktop. But when I tried to reproduce the same results, it didn't happen. So I'm going to try reinstalling, but is there any way to keep the places I've downloaded, or at least be able to grab them ahead of time instead of waiting in game? And I guess this probably isn't a bug or glitch, but I didn't see a tech support board. I'll try to hold off having to redownload everything until I find out if there's something else I can do, or if that's my only option. Thanks much for the help, and sorry if this is in the wrong spot.

hmm do u run vista?

quill_fire 01-20-2008 02:27 AM

I hate crashing to the desktop...happens to me when I cannon. Guess that's why I'm only a lvl 5 cannon...heh.

Matthias_129 01-20-2008 04:47 AM

No, I'm just running XP. Though one thing I notices, I was hanging around YouTube earlier today, and tried looking up some POTCO vids on there, and I noticed that the mouse cursor looked different on their screen than mine did. So I'm thinking that maybe something got lost in translation when the game installed. Also, something else I remembered, the two times I got the broken server connection in the game before dropping to the desktop, outside of the the notification window, I could see part of the screen, showing the High Seas. The island names were present, and so were the ships, but there was no water. Though the water was fine the time I was able to sail for about 30 seconds. So, I don't know.

I'm just going to try reinstalling, especially if there's a way to download the areas ahead of time. I appreciate the help by the way.

Update: Ok, it seems I can sail more often now, I finally got to visit Devil's Anvil and Tortuga, went sailing from Tortuga, made it about 40 seconds and ended up crashing again. And I had my graphics set to high and everything, cuz I had just been messing around at Port Royal, decided to try to sail instead of just logging out, and it worked haha. So I still don't really know why I'm having troubles sailing. Also, I can't get any other kinds of ships =/ I saved up 1k gold to buy either a Galleon or Frigate (couldn't remember how much they cost) and I have to pay for even the other basic ships. Bleh, guess I'll end up paying sooner than I thought.

I think I have the exact same problem, I have an XP and whenever I sail for awhile and start shooting at ships it crashes Frankly I have no clue what to do

Maximvs 02-04-2008 02:58 PM

Hate to say it - but it is a compatible Vid Card issue. I had the same issue (a) couldn't board at all without crashing when I select a ship or (b) be finally on the ship but about 20-40 seconds later crash.

My ATI 2600 HD Pro 512MB Card will not let me sail - my crappy on-board Intel 945 Video lets me sail and play (though, due to its LOW memory I crash with the cannon bug / sailing bug - but at least I can play).

Put in a call three months agao - and several time since (about once every two weeks I put the good card back in and se4e if they fixed it - nope).

Thats all the info I have for now. I did find a document on ATI cards having this 'type' of issue with other games and will be experimenting with it again shortly - and if I find anything goood I'll post but not counting on it... I think a NVidia card is in my near future...

I just began having the same problem. I cannot enter the high seas. I've been playing the game for a month without any problems. Yesterday I had to re-install the game because I got an error immediatly after signing in and now I get an error when trying to launch my ship. i noticied that my ship timer is counting down and i don't know why. Perhpas it things I am on the ship for some reason? IDK but I cant sail and thats the best part of the game

balintsan 02-21-2008 06:31 PM

I had iMac with Ati HD 2600 Pro 256MB, and I have same problem on Windows Xp, when I go sailling the program is crashing. Under Mac OSX 'everything ok:degen: ' i have only texture problems.

Johnny Bull 02-22-2008 07:17 PM

I had to back down to the 8.432 ATI display drivers. The 2 newest ATI drivers wouldn't let me sail either. Im running an ATI X1950 Pro video card and XP. You can get these drivers on ATI's website. These drivers will only work on ATI video cards! Check the drivers release notes for your cards compatibility with the 8.432 drivers.

Good Luck,
Johnny

Chris 02-22-2008 07:36 PM

yea like 90% of crashes are due to vid cards sadly

Johnny Bull 02-22-2008 09:20 PM

I think its more of a driver issue. It may help if you give at least this info:

1. Operating System (ex. Vista, XP, Mac...)
2. CPU Speed and Type (ex. 2.4 Ghz Intel Dual Core...)
3. Memory (ex. 1.0 Ghz or 512 Mhz...)
4. Video Graphics Type/Driver (ex. Radeon ATI X1950XT/8.432, Nvidia 7900GT/174.16...)
5. Sound Card (ex. Soundblaster Audigy 2...)
6. Computer Model (ex. Dell, HP, Custom Built...)

This may help us make sure we are comparing apples to apples, pardon the pun. This can be then be passed on to POTCO, ATI, Nvidia... for a fix.

balintsan 02-22-2008 09:23 PM

I have Ati card too and same problem. On windows you can try change 'api' paramter from 'default' to 'pandadx9' in game_options.txt in POTCO game directory. I think OpenGL support of Ati cards to buggy, but on my computer directx woking well. See instructions here : http://www.piratesonlineforums.com/f...20202#poststop

:12_1_138:That's okay. It happens to me all the time. But my dad's laptop is really fast, so when I play pirates on his, it never crashes. If you have DELL then I don't know why, because I have DELL. But it's a laptop.

jasumint2t 02-25-2008 07:23 AM

I was having exactly this same problem. I have an ATI RADEON 2600 HD Pro (PCI-E). Changing the one word in the text file as mentioned above solved my problem, although it created some slightly unsightly displays (water looks like there's lines beneath the surface) at least the game is playable.

Vendros 04-27-2008 06:59 PM

I know everyone is probably SICK of hearing about problems on the High Seas, but I have one too. I have tried every idea listed on this thread, including changing the game txt files, but when I do that, all I get is flashing colors, no pictures. Might be because I have DirectX 10. I also tried changing it to 10 instead of 9...I get the same result as if I hadn't changed at all: Once I get on the High Seas (if I make it at all) the game freezes. I run Windows Vista Home Edition with AMD Turion 64 x2 and ATI Mobility Radeon x1200 series graphics card. Now my graphics card isn't on the supported list, but it also isn't on the not supported list. I run as admin, i have it in Windows XP compatability mode, etc, etc. Any suggestions so I can play this game?!?!?!?!:psmiley27:

I have a Dell Inspiron 1701, different Cpu, etc, but it has an ATI Mobility Radeon X1400. It has Vista Home Premium edition OS.

Every time I exit POTCO, the game crashs, I submitted a bug report and was told to update my video drivers. ATI Mobility Radeon chipset is NOT directly supported by ATI, you must get any updated drivers from the manufacturer, in my case Dell.

When I upgraded my drivers as POTCO support recommended, I couldnt sail.. crashed immediately upon hoisting the anchor so to speak. Needless to say, I reverted back to my old drivers, id rather it work, and crash when I exit, than it not work at all.

On my regular PC at home I have an ATI X1950 card, and have never had a single problem.

Not sure there Vend - I have DX10 but forcing it to DX9 in the game using the steps below did solve my sailing issue... it really is too bad that us ATI card users are having such a hard time... I didn't need step 4 from below - just forcing the DX9 worked for me.

Now as for drivers I'm unsure about - I know mine are not the latest - so maybe I got a 'luck card' there by never upgrading them.

*note, steps below are not my credit - just put them here to spread the info so more people looking for answers may find it. Check the thread posted up there... and good luck :)

1) Go to Start | Programs | Accessories | Windows Explorer.
2) Navigate to C:\Program Files\Disney\Disney Online\PiratesOnline.
3) Double click on game_options.txt.
4) Make sure "state" has "working" on the line directly below it. If you see "attempted_working" change it to "working."
5) Under "api", please change the text from "default" to "pandadx9".
6) Save the file then launch the game.

Vendros 04-28-2008 07:54 PM

Alright, I have actually tried that list you posted. That is what gives me the flashing graphics. No shapes. Just a jumble of colors and lines. So I will try downgrading to an older version of my driver and see if that works. If not, THEN what??? This game needs to be more compatable with all types of advanced graphics cards!!!

Dr. Zeppers 05-01-2008 05:09 PM

Hah, I spoke too soon. After last nights maintenance, I can no longer sail.

I hoped they fixed something last night, they 'fixed' me good... doesnt work here anymore, and since my laptop has that standard error, they will just keep telling me to update drivers that dont exist.

Gave that a check just now as my ship still seems to be at sea....all is good on my end. I think the updates just messed up sailing again. ugh. Been gettin booted from the game each time I try to set sail, and one of my ships is out there in the ocean all by its lonesome.

Maximvs 05-01-2008 05:27 PM

It does appear the latest New Release has returned this Video issue with a vengenance... as once again I cannot sail even with the above fixes (where I have been fine for the last few months with the diagdx9 fix)... and once again I am at a loss...

I did try changing the file back to the default setup, as well as vid card Drivers (both up and back) and nothing - TP Crash (this is new) - Boat Crash.

I did notice this time thought he crash isn't quiet' the same. The first time with this crash was the High Seas screen would be loading and it was almost like the Chat Box or the Map screen or something would appear in the bottom left corner just before the crash...

This time - both in TP and Ship - the Loading Screens come up and then - black. Nothing. For about 3-7 seconds... then I get the Windows Crash Message and out I go...

So I think this is why the DX9 fix / default serttting and my attempts to go back / fourth with drivers had no effect... the issue isn't the same that's for sure. May be related - but its at a different part of the load where its crashing (not to say it isnt a vid issue... just different somehow) :)

So guess its back to the drawing board... If I get home and still no luck today after last nights fixes then I'll try to old vid card and see (to at least eliminate the Card)... discoveries to continue... %)

I have the same issue. Dell All-in-One w/ATI 2400 HD graphics card. Have tried everything, but can't sail. I'm a bloody land lubber! Online Support at POTC says they're working on a fix for this... fingers crossed it will be soon. It's frustrating to not be able to sail.

Well, after a mid-day emergency update that day, I was able to sail again. I changed nothing, they obviously are making adjustments.
