As for this, I've always found sailing a difficult skill to level up too. Maybe partly because I always play alone and usually sail only when sailing is needed. Only solution I could think of was to concentrate on sailing first. So my current character has pretty much just sailed with his sloop (I love sloops) and done very little else. I think it payed off though, I have sailing level 15 at character level 12. Now I just need to get some more money to buy that war sloop. And that cannon skill needs to be dealt with somehow too... Well, I have some kind of a plan for that.

ya, i did do alot of sailing. I think i was at lvl 25 when i bought my War Galleon, with money just from plundering. I now have the War Galleon and a War Sloop, and over half way to getting a War Frigate, with money primarily from sailing (although i do play alittle Padres poker time to time).

But Cannons, I lvled up my cannon along side with my sailing. Its currently at 21. Alot of how i got my sailing lvl high quick is because of how i sail and what i take on. I always take on big ships, but i never sail right into a fight. I tag them with the deck cannons and pummel them until they are well within broadside range, and then switch to broadside and start firing. Many high ships would give me 200 (or 220 with a crew) rep, 100 for cannon and a 100 for sailing. I also do this because i to sail solo alot, not until recently have i sailed with a crew.

So there is no fast way to level up sailing, you just have to sail alot. It would have been faster for me, had I known how good a hunting ground for ships the area north of Devils Anvil (or if leaving from Tortuga, sailing left) is. I'm currently going there with my sloop and net between 500 and 1000 sailing rep. per run. Not much money in it though, because of my small gargo space. But Josie's restocking and Bartholomew's quests help a bit. I'm not going to put points on treasure sense, at least yet, since I don't see myself sailing just for fun or even to collect money, as I'm beginning to be very fed up with sailing at the moment. But I'll keep this going until sailing is mastered and I don't need to worry about that skill anymore. :pirate7: Then I'll stay on land as much as possible...

Simon
A pirate not very fond of sailing, very weird, I guess Simon's a land pirate...

I do alot of sailing outside padres, but it can get tricky there. You just have to sail around the ocean and find a area that best suites your needs. I posted the strategy that i use in another thread, the one a bout leveling up quickly, check that out, it might help.

Dread Roberts 02-06-2008 07:46 PM

Also, i didnt want to make another thread, But i finally got my War Frigate. Thus completes my war fleet.

War Sloop - Dark Runner
War Galleon - Dark Demon
War Frigate - Dark Destroyer

:)

Waaaooooow, I could never do something like that! (But then again, I'm a basic access member at the moment.)

That did sound like a good strategy. With some of my earlier characters, which are all deleted now, I used to attack with both cannons and broadsides. The strategy wasn't as refined as the one you described, though. But I found it a bit too hectic for me to run back and forth on the ship. Also, I've wanted so far only to level up sailing, because previous characters of mine have been in a situation where every other skill is between levels 10 and 14 (even cannon) and sailing has been somewhere around level 6 or 7. And I wanted to have the chance to buy the war ships, when I have the money.

So your strategy sounds very good, and recommend it to people. But I am fond of my own sea battle system, which basicly is: Look for a lone ship or a ship that is going away from a group of ships. Then use, if needed, ramming speed, full sail and come about to get behind the enemy ship and stay there hammering it with broadsides - sloops are very good for this strategy and the type of the enemy ship really doesn't matter that much in my experience. Usually this leaves my ship undamaged or at most with just a few scratches. Spawning ships are something to look out for though, fighting two Phantoms with a sloop is not twice as hard as fighting one Phantom, but several times harder and usually results in fleeing in panic with a burning ship (and sometimes sinking, got to give credit to those shipwrights who pull your sunken ship somehow from the bottom of the sea and repair it with very little cost - imagine if you had to buy a new ship everytime your ship sunk, would make people a lot more careful at sea :laughks2:).

As for the cannon, it is a skill I don't see myself using much. I'm thinking of leveling it up once I have money for the war frigate (that will take time, but there is no rush). I imagine Simon parking his ship at a nice location, sinking a ship with cannons, possibly with some help from broadsides, then sitting back, sipping some rum (perhaps adding mint, lime, sugar, soda water and crushed ice making it a refreshing mojito; the last two ingredients should be available using voodoo by that time, I think) and waiting for a new ship to appear.

Anyway, I think I don't have much sailing left in me now, so I will turn to cutlass and pistol training and weapon unlocking; the remaining quests should have me sinking ships in order to master sailing eventually. I just want one more level to have faster broadside cooldown, that should take about two trips to the high seas (about 30 minutes).

Wow, this was a long post, hope people have stopped reading this before I've bored them totally... :7:

Ya, thats definetly a sloop strategy. Ive see people do it and ive seen it done successfully and ive seen it done with grave results, haha. But the strategy i use is also vunrable to spawns and patrols.

either stratgey can be used with great results if done correct, and it basically boils down to personal perference. :)

Yep, everyone should use a sailing strategy they like (an added bonus is if that strategy works). :)

Great!

Hey Dread that's awesome. We're both level 20 pirates but you are WAYYYY ahead of me on sailing and cannon, You're on my friends list so if you don't mind I'll be jumping aboard, maybe I'll learn something. Also, could use coaching on how to spend skill points, already wasted one on tacking......
