Remember When...
The purpose of this thread is to share how things were long ago before they were replaced or enhanced to how things are today. I appreciate reading those release notes chronicling these changes year after year at the official website and here at POF by our fellow pirates. I don't mind seeing those posted here for the sake of context. What I do like to read are the stuff we actually experienced while playing the game. If any one has screenshots of those past moments, by all means share them. This is our story, our Pirate Lore, that future pirates will take heart in reading about.
I'll start with one. I remember when Cuba use to be located far, far away and one had to sail past a lot of ships who were quick to fire at yours as soon as you were in range. This was challenging for any pirate starting out and a necessary place to go to start that Voodoo Doll, or how I prefer to term it, the VAF (Voodoo Action Figure) quest. I liked it really, traversing those dangerous seas to and from Port Royal, that is. There was even this funny glitch we discovered that caused our lowly Light Galleon to sail through Port Royal itself! True story. My friends and I would cannon the island for the fun of it. Just one of many fun glitches we experienced. For me though, it is the one glitch that kept me in my current guild. Had I not accidentally glitched (which was still a mystery to us at the time) before arriving to drop anchor and plant my boots on Port Royal, I would have left that guild due to an ugly fight we were having at Cuba. It was a sign I readily took to mean that I stay put and see it through. So I sailed back to the relief of my Guild and to the relief of one particular mate most of all. One of many magical moments still unfolding to this day. Those were the days you had to sail to Cuba when you played by yourself, especially as a Basic, and no one online could teleport there so you can teleport to them. Sailing was the only way, mates, until your Notoriety increased high enough to unlock that Totem Pole for Cuba. Nowadays, a pirate can pay a certain amount of gold to be shipped to Cuba as a Stowaway, climb aboard some stranger's ship via Public Access, or sail without risk of sinking whatsoever. Hopefully, POTCO will place Cuba further away as well as some (or lots of ) Skeleton ships in front of it so future Pirates can taste what we once did: sailing through real danger bravely when starting out (as a Basic preferably since it takes longer to increase Notoriety)... then bail to avoid jail at the last second. rofl :jack-sparrow1: |
I remember the Old Port Royal. Running up that hill to fight the Navy chaps. The fort was full of pirates then. Trying to get the voo doo doll parts or lvl the doll (lol running in circles). The grave yard that was behind will turners building where you would kill your first skele. When you finally set off for Devil's to get your gun your lite sloop had a skele strapped to the front and if you sailed to long... you sank lol.
My favorite old glitch? had 2. The 2nd favorite was getting behind the bar on tortuga and asking people that came in what they wanted or pointing your gun at your friend who was back there and telling him to give you all the money. The new pirates that came in would be like WHAT??? My first and always will be favorite was the caves on Kings Head and playing hide and go seek on empty Kings Head.... so many glitches go unaddressed, wish this one had. |
I remember the navy marine (I think it was a marine) in the old thieves den who had an axe, and was chopping wood. When you attacked him, he would come after you with his axe. It was cool.

I've only been playing the game since early 2010, but I remember when there was no inventory. I was basic back then, so I didn't know the situation for UA members, but for basics you picked an outfit and stayed with it. That was the reason I deleted so many characters (Misty was my sixth or seventh). When inventory did come out, I remember being very unhappy that my beloved laced vest was removed from Misty, because it brought the outfit together. Then I remember my friend getting a loot pouch, and I ask her, 'HOW ON EARTH DID YOU GET THAT!?'. And I attack an enemy and get a pouch! Eventually I have a new outfit for Misty.
William mentioned the infamous Empty Kingshead bug. Very fun - it was my old guild's hideout, and we had a lot of fun chatting - one day the Co. Empire appeared there, and we had a laugh fighting the EITC. :P I remember even being crowned 'Princess Of Kingshead' by my guild there. Good times. |
I remember when clothing drops were very rare still have the bright orange pants i got off a stump i was so happy to get a clothing drop now its kind of annoyiong

I remember in the very beginning, The main islands were more fun. The best thing that i think existed from the stuff removed or changed was seeing others on ships. You could chat, wave, crew up and other stuff even though in different ships...unless you were sailing, the compass showed the dots of peoples location when in a ship. It used to be pretty cool. Kind of sucks that it was removed.
There is a lot of good memories with 'old' POTCO that i think those who haven't experienced might find fun. |
I remember when i started, you could colour everything, and pick out of most all clothes when you started. Basics got almost as much as unlimited, and clothing drops were verrrrry rare. You could get blue/Green/ets circus pants and such. I remember when the new weapons came out and i was amazed when i saw someone using a broadsword. I saw that i could not whear my starting clothes, and not on porpuse, trashed them, regreting it today. I remember seeing my pirate in his "undergarments" and was like.... "WHAAAAA?" I remember beginning to like, and not like the new weapon release!
I miss you 2008, 2009! |
Disney failed to meet demand after they removed the old content that could have just combined with the new content.
Toontown didn't get rid of their main lands, but rather expand on it. Make new tunnels in existing lands. Pirates? They believe in: "Let's take content out and give less for our player base to explore and experience in." |
I remember the first time I ever sailed a warship, back when I was a level 20-ish. I was hoping around public ships, hoping to find a good one with a good crew. I boarded war galleon and the captain was afk away from the wheel. I seized the opportunity and took the wheel. The ship was MASSIVE compared to my frigate, I spent a few minutes just admiring it. Then I took her for a spin trying out the ultra broadsides, sinking a few warships. Back then sinking a warship was a feat, with this ship they were cake. of course I still took a bit of damage and when the captain came back on he took the wheel back. It was really fun, and only more motivation to reach level 15 sailing.

I also remember the two low level flag ships by devils anvil no telling how many times i sank them.
And also how the Black Pearl fianal battle was down for about a year and you checked every day to see if it was up |
I remember running around back in 2009 trying to figure out what was this and that. Then a week after i joined I noticed an island looked different. Then finished black pearl june 2010. Good days.

Ah, I remember back then. I remember I used to run up and down the hill on Tortuga (God Knows why) And I LOVED going to Fort Charles. Sailing to Padres Del Fuego was almost impossible, unless you were at least a level 30. The level cap was 40. It was also just about impossible to solo Darkhart. Oh how the times have changed. I see the game changing back to it's roots soon. Disney can't ignore us forever. Eventually they will realize, what WE the PAYING Customers want is what really matters.
|
haha, Ive been playing since the beginning :), fun times, and I remember it like it was yesterday Jim, Sailing to Padres was a chore in itself. It used to take me many tries to dock safely without being hammered by Man-o-wars and Barracudas. I would like to see the old islands back because they are more relatable to the movies, which is the main reason people were attracted to the game. The game was more fun when people were always on their feet trying to get things accomplished and when trying to reach the dreaded boss battle was the main goal. What do we have now? Looting, Leveling, and SvS? Its enough for now I guess, but not enough to hold the interest of the OLD timers who enjoyed the old game.

I remember when i was just on my little galleon on my own, everytime I sailed close to a skeleton ship I got really scared, and always got sunk, they were always a no-go then I got on this war frigate with full crew and it only took a couple of seconds to sink skeletons! I was amazed, I've not played POTCO for about a year now, I just can't be bothered learning what's what with the new updates and stuff.

Thanks everyone for sharing some of your experiences. I found some screenshots that might interest you. For the most part, they are some screens I took of old Port Royal and old Tortuga. Note the interface we used back then.
Enjoy! :SkullBullet1: http://img440.imageshack.us/img440/2...9124231016.jpg We were standing on that spot made famous in the film. http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/455...9124231046.jpg ~ ~ ~ http://img823.imageshack.us/img823/3...9118174614.jpg That led to Misty Mire. Jail was on the right side. http://img403.imageshack.us/img403/2...9223155632.jpg Up ahead was the town. Misty Mire was toward the left and a huge mound or hill was located on the right. That famous Feats of Strength competition was held there several times before Tortuga went belly up with the new place we know as today. I still remember them days. |
Pirates has changed. No doubt.
4 years ago, I first started playing. Rambleshack wasn't Rambleshack. It was Bilge Water. After you left the jail, you visited the local tavern. Inside, you met Doggerl Dan and his wife, and you learned all about your little inventory. Will Turner? Didn't come 'til later in the tutorial. You had to actually visit Port Royal, and his little warehouse. Upon exit, you went down to visit Bo Beck. Board the ship, fire a few cannons, and then suddenly, Jolly Roger shows up. I had never heard of this guy. For me, the biggest enemy to pirate kind always seemed to be either Davy Jones, or Cutler Beckett. To meet this new antagonist, this man with a face of bones, a cannon for an arm, and a hat that I envied, it was rather disconcerting. It wasn't until later that I realized he served little purpose in the storyline. (This was pre-invasions, mind you.) Then you head out into the world. Start out on Port Royal, head to Tortuga, and listen to that old soundtrack. Always the soundtrack. But I still prefer the old music to the new versions. Then your sent into the caverns. All identical. Filled with enemies of varying size, difficulty, and the like. You went to Cutthroat Isle, you found every type of skeleton. Not just the Spanish ones. I never ventured to Padres Del Fuego, Isla Tormenta, Outcast Isle. Those places were areas of death, the baddest of the bad, and only true pirates ventured there. My lowly level 26 pirate wouldn't be deemed worthy to venture to any of these place. Nobody would give me a ride, and they were too far to sail with my lowly light sloop. I recall when the best gun you could have was a tri-barreled pistol. I remember the dread I felt if I got close to death, for your first k.o. was your last. I saw voodoo staffs, and thought that those who obtained them deserved high praise. I drank potions that healed, and only healed. I felt the joy of mastering my sword at 25. I swung cutlasses, for they were the only sword to swing. I caught the coin as it tumbled to the ground. I thought the cap of 60,000 gold was unreachable. I jumped for joy at the thought of doing the Black Pearl Boss Battle. Some people don't remember that Pirates Online used to be a lot simpler. I miss those days. Then I look to the future. I see the updates of the past two years. The thrill of my first invasion. Picking up a loot skull chest. Using my famed blunderbuss. Fishing for those legendaries. Privateering for the french. Cannon defense. Improved cave systems. Considering the updates that have happened in the last 2 years alone, I say the future of Pirates looks bright. |
I remember back when you got killed in pvp there was no loading page after just right back to fighting :( now it gives enough time for your enemy to try and run away to regain some health...
|
Ah, so many things in my memory. A few of the best were the pvp glitch in old Tortuga, Abassa, and the empty Kingshead. Both provided hours of fun, even crashing from pvp xD
|
Nice screens, Plat! I wish I was on POTCO back then. :)
Does anyone have screens of the old Tormenta Caves? I've been wondering what they had looked like for quite some time now. |
I remember when freebie was even MORE limited then it is now that I've finally got back into it again >_>; admittedly, now I'm giving PotCO a shot again, it seems worth the money at least now...
|
I remember when you didn't have to choose which weapons you wanted to have in the F1-F4 sections. It used to be All the weapons would be F1-F7, you didn't have to choose which ones...
|
I remember the old islands, too. The thing I liked most was that you didn't have to twist and turn so much to get where you were going! I still have to open my map every time I go to Padres or Port Royal now because I get turned around. We pirates have a hard enough time on land lol. I came back to the game about 6 months ago after at least a year away and was shocked by all of the new weapons. Being averse to change, I played with my level 25 fine cutlass for quite a while before even trying anything else. If it was good enough back then, it was good enough now. I miss the simplicity of the weapon choices. They did the job quite well if u ask me. I was surprised to find that my level 40 pirate was no longer mastered. Nor were my weapons.
I remember the days when I would keep as much distance as I could between my little light galleon and those terrifying skeleton ships. I knew I'd be sunk if I got too close. Port Royal and Tortuga were my home. Cuba was a challenge. And the other islands? Well, I'd heard of them, but I knew going there was not going to happen anytime soon. I remember when we got together the crew for my final boss battle - back when the Black Pearl was the last challenge...and the biggest challenge we had - and a good one. It was a big deal. Everyone stood around and cheered for you when it was over. And we always did it with a big crew. I remember when Goliath was the most massive, most daunting ship we'd ever encountered and I shook in my boots every time we successfully made our way through the drawbridges only to find Goliath waiting for us! It wasn't a sure thing with fury back then. And it wasn't hard to find people who wanted to help out with your "BB". It was a challenge. We all loved it. I remember when potions were kept along the bottom of the weapons list. Potions were for healing - not for turning blue & running faster. And we needed them, because if we KO'd, we went to jail - no exceptions. We couldn't depend on a nice bystander to just wake us up. And your gold? Well, you could keep your eye on it at all times since it was right near the bottom right-hand corner of the screen. I liked watching it rise ever so slowly toward that seemingly unreachable max of 60,000 coins. I did finally get there when I maxed grenades in the Catacombs on Padres where we'd stand behind and above the lava - literally on nothing - and lob grenades at the unsuspecting raiders and officers below. They could still reach us from time to time, but it was a great spot to hang out with friends and level. Those were some good times. Thanks for this thread! It was really fun to read and brought back tons of memories for me. |
Here's a look at the old Port Royal:

Thank you, ukebec! I'd have liked to explore that place.

Holes in Sails. Land PvP via SvS. Skeletons on Ships. The basic stuff is where it is.
