Game launch problem...

Hi!
My friend wants to play POTCO, but there is a problem :
He created an account on piratesonlines.com, but when the game installing, it launch and nothing happened then.
I saw the folders of the games, and there is only 3 files in the game directory.
We have installing the game 4 times but it is always the same thing...

Can anyone help us? Thanks in advance...

Quite possibly a permissions problem. Was he installing the game with an account that has administrative permissions?

nitnek 04-06-2008 02:30 PM

We have testing with 5 accounts and its not works....

Eustace the Monk 04-06-2008 02:56 PM

But are any of those 5 accounts (For NT, XP, Vista, etc) the administrator of the PC?

Another possibility is that after the first install failed, the remaining installations detected the files you mentioned and assumed the game was already installed. You can try deleting the entire c:\Program Files\PiratesOnline folder and try the installation again.

Before you do, there should be a log file amongst the files that did make it to the PC. This file may tell you exactly why the failure took place. Look for any file in the PiratesOnline folder that has a .log or .txt extension and open it in notepad. You can also copy that text here for us to to look at.

Another thing, you need to ensure the internet connection is active before running the installer as most of the install files are actually pulled from the internet.

If none of these work, your best course of action is to contact Disney Support at http://apps.pirates.go.com/pirates/v...l_support.html

Good luck and keep us informed.

Thanks Eustace The Monk.
I'll try tomorrow with my friend :pirate6:

So chances are, it is one of the potential conflicts. I would start by temporarily disabling the multiple Antivirus and client security and see if it installs, as most AV software conflicts with something. The client security could be blocking the connection.

Since it looks like the install died right after attempting to launch the splashscreen, it sould be a problem with the S3 onboard video controller. Is the NVidia 5500 onboard, or is it an add-in card? If the card has been added and the S3 was not disabled, it could be creating a problem with the conflicting controllers. More importantly, it appeard that the device driver for the 5500 is almost a year and a half old. I would HIGHLY recommend updating it from NVidia's website.

If disabling the AV stuff or updating the video driver does not make it work, You would need to contact Disney to see if there is a way to work around the potential conflicts they listed. Good luck and keep us informed.

Okay Eustace The Monk ! And thanks.
I'll try on my friend's computer as soon as possible !

Had the same problem with my laptop. It uses the same integrated video display adapter that your friends computer has. Per Disney this display adapter has not been tested for the game and therefore is not supported.

The game would install but not run. It was suggested that I go into the game options file in the Disney/Pirates Online folder and manually change the graphics options to the lowest settings. Due to the game never having run, there was no game options file.

The way I solved the problem and got it to run on my laptop was to go into the Disney/Pirates Online folder on my desktop computer, copy the game options file and the last good configuration file and pasted them into the Disney/Pirates Online folder on my laptop.

I still had to adjust some settings but it runs on the laptop fine now.

Unfortunately, it will not even let him install it, so he is missing a little more than just the game_options.txt. I do not believe it will work to copy the entire PiratesOnline directory from one system to another, as most installers imbed DLLs and whatnot in locations other than that of the game.

nitnek 04-07-2008 09:36 PM

Hi!
In the game folder, there is only 3 files :
Launcher1
Disney Pirates of the Caribbeans Online
and a file txt (or more)

So I'll try as soon as possible with my friend to stop the antivirus (he haves AvastAntivirus).

Samantha Wildhound 04-08-2008 12:22 AM

i had that problem...but it was due to my comps date and time set wrong..it would NOT even download the files to the game, till i corrected that, not sure if thats even your prob..but worth a shot.

bigdaddy 04-09-2008 08:50 PM

exact same problem here

I have the exact same problem. Launcher log file looks very similar. Stops at same part. I have lap top with NVIDIA Quadro FX 360M card. Went through online chat support a few min ago. They had me reinstall and update drivers but still same thing. Said they would escalate the problem. The only potential problem files we have in common is avast and I have that disabled.

I am going to try to copy a working settings file from desktop tonight like Grizzly suggested. If that works, I will post the solution here.

With yours, the 3 things I see I have seperated above. The first section shows a problem with your DirectX 9 installation. This is a common failure I have noticed between these 2 logs and my own system. The second section has me bugged. You said D had you update drivers. WHich one, because your video driver shows that it is from August, 2004. This one should really be updated. The last part just shows the standard stuff, and you said you tried disabling the AV, so there should not be a problem in that area.

You should seriously consider updating your video driver. Since this is a laptop (The 360M designated a Mobile device), you would need to update the driver from the manufacturer's website, rather than nvidia (though you could try their detect utility). D has a good list of supported video cards and drivers at http://apps.pirates.go.com/pirates/v...s_drivers.html. Let us know if any of the suggestions work, so we can get a good list of solutions together. Good luck.

Something occured to me when I was able to compare the 2 similar issues. Both failed the DirectX portion. I thought this might just be the culprit, until I checked the install log on my laptop, and it showed the same failure, so that kind of ruined that theory.

Then I noticed something a few lines earlier on yours. There is not 512 MB of memory in the system (System Requirements calls for it). There is only 510, which is really an odd number. It looks as though there may be a problem with one of the sticks of memory. Either way, it will be difficult to get much of anything to run smoothly with 89% memory utilization. Let us know what you find out.

Thanks Eustace. Althought my video driver has the 2004 date in the log, it is the latest download from Dell. The driver update date is 3/28/08. I tried reinstall again and the date in the launcher did not change. dxdiag says:

Driver Date/Size: 2/22/2008 05:46:00, 5969536 bytes

I think the problem may be in the install. Both of us have only three files on our harddrive after POTC installs. Unless everything else gets downloaded once you run the launcher.???? Can I install a full version from download somehow? In other words go around the automated install features of the launcher???

Whats really wierd is that POTC was working on my laptop up until a few weeks ago. Heck I was up to lvl 18. I think something happened when the launcher downloaded an update. Can I go back to an old version of POTC some how?

Eustace the Monk 04-10-2008 12:54 PM

Unfortunately, without experiencing the same issue you are having, I cannot acertain what exactly the problem is and need to try touse only that log to determine the issue. If it worked in the past, but does not now, something flaky happened. Before you had the install problem, was there an issue with the program where you needed to uninstall it? It just seems odd that all the files are no longer there. When the updater runs, it only removes the files that it is replacing, it does not delete all of them. Since you have another PC running the game, you might try copying the entire PiratesOnline directory to a CD, then to the laptop. SInce it was working there before, the registry settings and DLLs may still on the PC and it might just work. Good Luck.

Loot Hard!

bigdaddy 04-10-2008 01:54 PM

All the files are gone because I've been through the uninstall / reinstall process. When you uninstall the directory is wiped. When you install It only gives you the launcher. I think the first successful run of the launcher downloads everything else that the game needs. If the launcher crashes, you get an empty directory. Basically the launcher is key to the game running. It seems to control the update and install process.

I don't think I can just copy files from a working machine. I'm sure the uninstall process clears the registry. I think my only hope is to get disney to send me an older version or for them to fix the root problem in a subsequent update to the launcher.

bigdaddy 04-11-2008 03:32 PM

still fighting this with no luck Other things that have not worked:

Install firefox and use that as browser to see if its an ie problem. = same result
install all windows updates = same result
Windows restore back to a time when POTC worked on this laptop = same result
Update direct X = same result
Try other resolutions = same result.

I am really thinking that the launcher was updated and is not compatible with something in my system. However, I can't figure out what it is.

Anyone else running potc on a dell m4300 laptop?

Eustace the Monk 04-11-2008 05:53 PM

I use an XPS 1330 with no problems, but not the same model, so some Dells are working. I've thought of everything I could. Sorry i was unable to help.

bigdaddy 05-12-2008 03:05 AM

FIXED !!!!!

Ok Laptop is back working. One of two changes did it. The updated the install system. I know because I have been installing every few days to check it out. It is definately different. Second thing is that I found a check box titled "automatically configure settings" that was not checked it is under:IE7/tools/internet options/connections/lan settings/" Internet and email worked but was having a problem connecting to FTP site via windows explorer. This fixed it and POTC started working. If you are having same problem, check this.

Constance DW 05-14-2008 12:37 PM

I am also having the same problem with my laptop. It looks like all of the programs are there that need to be there but when I go to log in it's just a black screen. I have deleted the game 5 or 6 times and still no change. Anyone have any ideas for me?

Desdaemona 07-02-2008 10:39 PM

Hi! I ran across this forum while searching for an answer to the problem I'm having, and lo and behold, here was someone else with the exact same issue.

I noticed that the OP got his game to work eventually, but I still haven't, so I thought I'd add my info to this in the hopes that maybe someone would have a flash of brilliance or there'd be some new info available.

Anyhow, I downloaded the installer for PotCO. It acts like it installs fine, but at the end, after I click "Finish," when it tries to launch the game, I get an error saying: Toontown Launcher has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

Same thing happens when I click the icon for the launcher itself. Just the error, no game.

The launcher log text is included below. You can see that it dies at the same point as the others that have been listed in this thread.

I've tried every suggestion from this thread, and nothing has made a difference. The log shows the driver date on the video card as being 2004, but for some reason, as was noted earlier, it's just not updating. I downloaded the newest drivers as of today.
