To guild or not to guild.....
I'll start by saying I started the game about a month ago. In the first few days I ran into a pirate that was more than helpful in getting me on my way. At the end of the day he asked if i wanted to join up with the guild he was in. I figured he was really helpful so what the heck and joined. The next day I log in and I have no guild name under mine and all of the guild info is gone. I find out that the Master has left.
One of the previous members asks me if I want to be in the new guild she will be starting. So yet again, I join and am made an officer. This new group is very unresponsive to any and all members. Usually when I log in and see guildmates I drop a quick note to say hi. No responses. I had a noob ask me for some help which I provided we spent about three hours going over different tasks and I was giving her pointers on things I had learned or picked up from others. She was a good player and seemed to be a nice person so I askher to join the guild. I finally get a response from the other members of the guild asking me why I am bringing in a lower level player. It was not whispered to me but rather sent out so all guildmembers could see including the new member. At this point I am about done with guilds or at least this one. Is this something to expect from guilds? I see forum listings from others that seem pretty fun but..... |
guilds that are bad are power hungary and mean like comunist countries
|
Frankly, I would have responded to these so called quiet tongue-biting guildmates (until they see you add a new member they dont like) with.....
Why? Because I can. The GM gave me this ability to use as I see fit, and since none of my other guildmates are communicative, or even helpful, I have now enlisted some guild members that are. If you have a problem with this, please notify the GM and have them take it up with me directly. More than likely its really time to move on, start your own guild, gather your own bunch of guildmates/friends. Guilds with an Elitist attitude are generally short lived, and almost NEVER fun. |
Im in a guild of only three and we have been online friends a long time now. The three of us will do anything for each other and I think bigger is not better when you think about it that way. I know someday we will add more to our guild but it will be people who most assuredly will do anything for each other. The beauty of a guild is you watch each others backs when needed and lend a hand when two are not enough.

I pretty much thought that being a member of a guild was to help or get help with the game when needed. But more Importantly than anything was it is a group of people with a common goal... to have fun.
|
I agree with Elizabeth. My guild is quite large, but we have a core of main players. We are always chatting with each other, and I always try and greet any guild member as they come online. Like other good guilds, we have our own forum site with an Officers Mess, for the GM and officers to share views, suggest members to promote etc.
I am proud of the people I make Officers, and would never question why they invited a new member. They are given that privilege for a reason. I trust their judgment, and know that they think this person would make a good fit. If not, I know they would just as quickly remove that member. We have few rules, but the main one is "Be Polite." followed by "Have Fun". Why would your guild want to embarrass you in such a way? Thats awful. I would be out myself. I can see why they have jaded your impression of guilds in general. Start your own (or join one of the many good guilds in this forum). |
I agree with Danger... there are some great guilds in this forum and you should check them out. I've only had personal experance with two... The Elite Circle and the Fortune Reapers. Both have great Guild Masters who don't put up with childish drama or bully tactics.
You can see who the active GM's are in this forum... they (and the Officers they entrust) set the tone for their guild. If the GM is never on... the whole guild could run amuck. My take is "to guild"... I have more fun playing in groups than by myself. If one guild doesn't suit your taste... try another one. |
There are guilds for everyone and it's the matter of finding the right guild for you. Some guilds are just a bunch of jerks while others are very nice, some are also just a little group of friends, there are over 10,000 guilds out there so the choices aren't limited from being in a guild you don't like to not being in a guild at all. I recommend you going with "To guild" because there is no guild that will satisfy everyone and just because you were in a guild that you didn't like doesn't mean you should give up on guilds completely.
I wish you the best of luck and I hope you choose what's best for ye! :buds: |
Thanks everyone that has responded so far. I am now in search of a new guild.... I have been reviewing those listed here and see a few promising groups.

My experience thus far with guilds has been positive for the most part. The main guild I became a member of was/is a fantastic group of players. No egos there and everyone has fun and jokes around. I recently joined the War Wenches with my newer character and have found them to be equally as polite and fun and so far am really enjoying being part of their group. I just started my own guild and I am hoping to take the positive experiences I have had and model it there.
I say guild your character. Once you find the right fit, you will be happy you did. |
Yeah - I see TONS of people out there recruiting for Guild members... and always ask "Why should I join?"
If the answer is something arrogant, (We only let level + members, or We're the best) I personally wouldnt join. The most COMMON answer Ive gotten is along these lines, "Mines the coolest" or "Our Guild owns"... well... WHY? How active? Average members online? Do they meet up ever? Before I joined another Guild that wasnt my own (JUST started one in game - Umbrella Academy - yep.. Im an MCR Fan can ya tell?) I would tell you I would want to know what the rules were, and what is/is not allowed. I like the no TPing without asking rule. Some Guilds seem great - loved my last one with the exception of the large volume of OT chat. (Still a great Guild, I just wanted something different!) Lately, theres a LOT of people moving from Guild to Guild tho - just this week about 4 of my friends, and myself quit, or changed guilds. I wouldnt give up - just ask questions before joining! |
It's best to join a guild that a friend starts methinks. Or it's good to join an ambitious one, like the Charming Thieves. With so many ambitions, can I not be trusted to play overtly?
|
I started a guild myself just to avoid all the gild membership requests.
Just me, my wife, and the kids. |

Again, I appreciate all of the feedback. I was on-line last night and the only member of my guild on. Three guildmates came on-line at different times. I whispered to each as they joined just to say hi. Not one response... So I sent a note out to the guild just saying hi and how is everyone. Still not one response. Maybe as Goldlover says above - I really dont feel a part of anything. So off to a new Guild
Thanks again everyone. |
Good luck with your search blkhwk. It is a bit like getting a good suit. Find the one that fits you best and it will last a lifetime (well sort of but you get the idea lol)

In the Wenches there are times when we have 7 or 8 people on and we are silent I mean hear crichets chirp silent. At other times we can only have 3 or 4 on and we are talking away.
If I was in a guild where I felt left out or not a part of it I would move on as well. As for guild or not to guild.....It would take some tine and homework to find a good one. All guilds have their weak points. Yes even mine. I would look here on the forums and read the threads in the guild sub forums to maybe find one that meets what you might be looking for. There are all kinds. Some have all ages while others have only adults. Some only take high lvs and others all. Heck there is a couple that only take female pirates.... Happy guild hunting.... Bella |
I like others get those out of nowhere guild requests all the time. I would ask something about the guild before joining like posted above. How many people are around, what rules, is there a theme to the guild. To me, a better communication system, whats the structure of the guild and function. As of late I would probably ask what happens if the gm leaves, with so many of these issues lately. Lastly I would maybe check who knows a little something about computers in the guild, if you are one that is not a complete wizard. I have seen more help in the guild with so many of the lag issues and things like that, that some people think some of us are gods, that we actually figured out something so they could get in the game and play, where all else failed.
When I am building a character I like to do it solo and not get tied up with a lot of guild things. The last one took like three weeks, this one is coming up on 30 and was trying to go slow, but alto more quests added. The higher the level seems like the more requests, and even out right how dare you not be in a guild at your level type things. What you might want to do, is make a alt character and just go check out different guilds. People don't even want to talk to ya in your own guild, I would say adios. I know we have in the past taken players alt's in, and give them a chance to check things out. Imho a lower level character is going to have a lot better chance of finding out what the guild is really about. If you are going be ignored and treated badly as a low level, then you might think about if that is the group you want to get hooked up with. |
i have made three guilds the first one was succesful in members but very boring because no one would talk the next two were both successful in both catagories
|
If I crew a guy or gal without a guild, and we hit it off, I'm gamin' to guild them. Oftimes I'll find a really good crew that follows orders, to their benefit and mine. I'll like to keep in touch as impersonally as possible: not friends, just guildmates.
|
yeah i left my guild the other day. i kept inviting members to board ships with me (after already having disabled them) and no response. not even "busy" or anything. so i boarded them myself. then i asked for a level check and got one response. whats the point?
|
I left my guild last night. I joined a guild about two minutes into the game and I haven't seen or heard from any of my guildmembers since then.
|
Try out some of the guilds on this forum. I find that if people are so into the game that they join a forum, then will probably be long term players.
The excellent link for guilds advertising for members started by League (http://www.piratesonlineforums.com/f...ead.php?t=5342) is a great place to start. Chat to some of the members on here, drop them a PM to find out what they want in a member. I would be pleased to allow someone into my guild to try us for size. Just let me know why you are leaving so maybe I can make some changes for future prospective members. |
Here is an update on my guild situation..... There was a core group (4) from my original guild that seemed to actually participate with each other. We found that we were always joining up with a small group from another guild. When we discussed our guild situation with them they seemed to be having the same experience. We have since created our own guild and are 9 members strong and enjoying the heck out of the game and the guild.
So to those of you that are not happy with your guild... Keep looking or better yet start your own with people that you enjoy playing the game with. Join a crew and if you like the crew go from there. |
If anybody ever wants to see what a good guild is (think I just hurt my shoulder patting myself on the back), check out the Krewe. It doesn't matter if you're in the Krewe or not--we'll sail with you, or even entertain the random requests for help.
You want chatter? We got chatter. You want fun? We got fun. You want helpful players? We got helpful players. You want to learn how to work together as part of a team? That's what the Krewe is. See ye online! |
