Quake - The Good Ol Days :)
hrm - these guys are a very professional team of Security Advisors - about 3 years back I did some work in game security, patching flaws, vulnerabilities, etc.. mainly for the Quake3 Engine - thats a large part of the reason this article appealed to me - its the same line of work ive been doing for ohh ever

LOL Rackat
The Quake3 Engine had a lot of vulnerabilities that allowed for buffer overflows and Command Overflows thus causing the servers to totally crash out and kick everyone we had done some patch work on our own servers that stopped such attacks and used them on our customers games as well to prevent our customers from being attacked it was simple holes being patched really but i know the entire quake3 engine nearly inside and out as well as mapping and map scripting etc.. I didnt play much of the actual quake Games - but other games on its engine ET, RTCW, JKA, JKO, etc. To Clarify by Customers - I Spent roughly 7 years as CTO of a company that I actually Sold my own company to LOL so by customers I mean my Customers - I had to research and understand how all this worked in order to secure their servers - ohh and dont even get me started on TeamSpeak Servers or Ventrilo Sheeesh talk about open |
ET and RTCW are still on my old PC. Q3 is the only one I keep up on my newer PC. Well, that and the auto-updates from POTCO, lol. Did you work with any of the people at OrangeSmoothie?
|
Quake - The Good Ol Days :)
Well they may not be that old... but - since Rackat's and SangrelX's posts are about Q3 (and not about the findings of GM's findings) instead of deleting them I thought I'd move them here to Land Lubbers so the discussion could continue (of course keeping within POF's Policies :) )
Carry On Gents :D |
OSP - LOL havent heard that in a long time
I dont recall if I did much with Orange - I think minor suggestions was about it But I havent heard OSP in ages now Shrub on the other hand I made Massive changes to shrub mod for my own customers and such etc.. even had my own lil mod that id toy with from time to time with jetpacks, sticky nades, anti-gravity boots, etc.. LOL thats the OLD OLD Days |
May I ask What Quake is.
|
Quake was a Very aged First Person Shooter
Fast Paced Kill or Be Killed game play and boy i do remember some of the old quake it was fun at the time but I didnt get too heavy into it |
SX - we had some great level designers in our Quake community. I still keep up with the new maps that are put out at Tigger's site. OSP was a pretty good group. They did a lot for the community.
Swash - The Quake series from id software has four installments. Quake 1, 2, and 4 had 'story' lines in the game play, but Quake 3 was built specifically for Arena style play and more specifically for online play against others. Rather than a story line, Quake 3 had a series of Tiers each comprised of seperate arenas with harder and harder NPC's that you had to defeat. The player with the most kills (score) at the end of the time limit was the winner of that Arena. If you are a strictly RPG gamer, the fast pace and kill or be killed aspect of an FPS would probably not interest you. id has some good stuff. |
old days
man anyone remember Apogee ? 3d Realms owns them now They had Games Like Crystal Caves Commander Keen Duke Nukem Wolfenstein 3d Whacky Wheels Paganitzu Secret Agent Cosmo's Cosmic Adventures Balls of steel Beyond the Titanic Major Stryker Secret Agent And i played em ALL!!!! LOL in fact you can get almost all of em for free now from 3dRealms anyways LOL the Good OLD Days |
Wolfenstein 3d, Commander Keen & Duke Nukem! I think I may be making a trip to 3drealms.

Let me know if they have anything posted on DN4 :) |
My OFx (Old Farts Extreme) game clan, started over 9 years ago playing DukeNukem 3d online at a place called.. HEAT
They let us voice chat and launch our own servers for Duke, Q,Q2,Q3 They eventually sold out to Gamespy, and we moved to "MPlayer" which soon got bought out by Gamespy also. <sigh> Not very found of Gamespy.. Listening to you guys brings back memories. We did the OSP thing for awhile (orangesmoothie), one of our old time favorites on Q3 ended up being Freeze Tag. I finally killed our Q3 server, needed the server space on our server box, and noone was playing it. Got a CSS server up now, but we dont play much of that anymore either. Now I be playing PIRATes... Arrrrrr |
Zepper LOL
- I remember Freeze Tag on Quake but wasnt fond of it I got heavy into RTCW and ET CSS I have a copy installed right now i just dont play it my buddy is in some clan called ompf or oompf or something like that i got him hooked on CSS the old days i call it - cuz I sure do miss the old days of ET and RTCW :( I had a few servers that sat number 1 on RTCW and ET for a long time |

Then most of them started mimicing war, like RTCW, MOH, COH, BF1942, CS, CSS, etc, etc. Same stuff, just spread differently. Why I dropped it.. totally boring. Doesnt matter how much you polish it, its the same boring war garbage. Don't like the mentality of the players of these games either (99% of the time thier game play surrounds thier ego). And who wants to play war anyways.. blah. Part of what I found appealing to freeze tag, it was an actual 'game' not a shoot'em up. hehe Love me pirates... I dont have to challenge anyone, and cannot be challenged when I do not with it. |
I can agree on most part that the War Based games have been redone and refried one to many times
but I started on some of the originals - Wolfenstein 3d, Spear of Destiny, and Doom then RTCW and ET I dont play any of the others really - I found Pirates was more enjoyable before i ran out of quests atleast |
Never heard of quake lol

Saw the date on that.. lol Just making me feel older!!! subject change!!! j/k Anyone see the movie "DOOM" it was modeled after the game which was Quakes predecessor, and John Carmack (the original master brain behind it all) was in the movie as a scientist (he gets killed). My favorite line in that whole movie is when "Sarge" (The Rock), says "Im not supposed to die in this movie" just before he dies.. lol |
Wow 12 years ago!
I was young! I only got a computer like 2 years ago so i wouldn't have known lol |

Heres some DukeNukem bits for ya - I was really big on the Map Editor towards the end - I built an entire hospital (3 floors, fly out windows using jetpack, parking lot - elevators and stairs - the works) using actual floor plans of the building... The cafeteria was a big hit area, as well as the patient floors - dirty fighting was on the main floor where the offices were (small rooms conected by vents and back halways). You could raid closets for health and supplies or just steal them from patient rooms LOL :D Tthe BEST part was I designed 1/3 of the Hospital to actually blow up! - and if hit just a certain way you could actually destroy one side of the entire building! This left the side exposed with rubble to scrounge through but fly from any floor at the same time - a great project :D Then, I went even bigger - and built an entire working NASCAR racetrack arena! Complete with 4 working race cars on an oval track, in-field setup, Grandstands and Garage areas (connected with ventelation for sneaking around the track using elevator sprites which actually work like teleoprters for those in sprite world :) - the race cars I used the train sprites and got them running on four programmable tracks...) You could jump onto the race cars drving by and climb in and shoot guys in the stands or the infield :) Pop out of vents right in the middle of the in-field or in any garage bays... it was my best work :D Ah the good old days... if only DN4 would come out - and have an interface like that again I'd have to try to build them again :) |

But man, you brought back memories, I gave up on the title I now call "Duke For never" (it was supposedly going to be called Duke Forever) Thanks... I needed that. I wish Duke worked over the net, there used to be a way, but I dont think Duke even works under XP, last time I tried I had problems as I recall hehe. Loved that game.. it was.. Groooooovy! I look good! Time to start kicking *** and chew bubble gum.. and im all outta gum. |

AWESOME!! MAX I got into making maps and such using the q3 engine the biggest ones I did as side projects are 1. An entire Pod racing arena using Starwars JKA Models !! - complete tracks, working usable racers, stands, pit sections, ramps for jumping across pits and weird stuffs such as lava etc.. was fun to toy with 2. was a full map of stargate with a gate, DHD, i never finished it i left off with it at the ability to Dial out on the gate and a wormhole could open - it was going to be where u can walk up and partially into the hole and it was basically a teleporter (so no actual travel through a wormhole LOL - was still working scripting for that cuz it could have been done) both projects were never finished just sort of toyed with then tossed One i did finish for a game was called Enigma (was about the Enigma Machine) for the objective parts of the map - but it had side tasks and arena's including a cage match arena for one vs one practice and fighting, sniper range, and tons of goodies!! I miss those days - course i did a map for a MOD called Wild West MOD too that one was fun but way way to large even with Hint brushes it still drew FPS down to far for video cards to handle at the time old school memories LOL and Duke Nukem - I had that game when it came out !! was the first game I ever heard talk like he did **** "Its time to Kick @@@ and Chew bubble gum, and Im all out of Gum" or when you goto the str|ppers and he says "wanna Dance", "Shake it Baby" etc. or the Microphone he would sing Born to be Wild **** --- there was also a NON Censored version of Duke that you could enable too - which was even more wild |

The Ten Network (LOL Theres Dating Myself :D) was the only way I knew to do it - without runing it over an IPX (old Novell protocol) network (which I had in my house at the time for LAN Parties :D ) Quote:
But thats another story - and I got to catch a plane! (its running late... but not too late!) I'll be back later tomorrow :) |

I have Duke Nukem 3d Somewhere in backup LOL id have to dig it out but as for Command and Conquer - i tried that a little bit but never got into it I tried the original top down view small 3d-ish graphics etc... point n click basically - as for lan parties Move!! over **** we used to spend HOURS playing RTCW and UT on MP at home I had a fun lil gimmick going on I used to roam around with a Rocket Launcher and whenever I saw one of the guys that i was about to blow to bits id yell across the house HELLO RABBIT!!! (is an old movie reference lol) and BAM they blew up - man i miss those days living at home no bills, tons of computers and parts to tinker with, etc. |

Oh, man. There were quite a few of us that all traveled to have a LAN gathering. There were close to 30 people that showed up with all their gear in tow. We rented a conference room for Friday and Saturday and hooked everything up. Ordered pizza and for those that were old enough we stocked up on Grog. Quake, UT, RTCW, and a few other games got a mauling that weekend. I tried mapping, but could never quite get it right. It was fun to try though. |
**** RACKAT!!!!
I might have to give you the Brand New Car I won from MAX!! I didnt think anyone would know where that Catch Phrase came from! **** I need to rent he Local Community Center sometime and hold a MASSIVE LAN PARTY!!!! P.S. this is nuts but the forums keep Censoring the Acronym L-M-B-O (if you can say it in game lol shouldnt we be able to say it here?) |
Quote:
Well, since Pirates is not really a LAN game, it would be fun just to get a lot of people together in one conference hall to play. Then get some of the 'old' games like Quake, UT, or RTCW going. Becca, a family friend, is the one that got me hooked on Pirates. She occassionally makes trips down to stay the weekend with us. She was here for the first round of double gold recently. It was great to be able to sit in the same room and just tell each other what we were going after. Made sinking the Omen, Juggy, and Behemoth a lot easier. |

Zepper, Very smart Vent or Teamspeak is an awesome tool for really any MP Games I can get as many TS and Vent as I need right now -- perhaps I should setup a Public one for Pirates? I will be using either Vent or TS for our guild if I ever get it to a decent amount of players and to Max - what did you mean you cant say LM?O in game I see it used hundreds of times a day in game - are people technically not supposed to say that ive never gotten into any trouble for it either - however if lol we arent supposed to use it I will start curbing that habit OHHH P.S. "Hello Rabbit" - Robert Francis 'Bobcat' Goldthwait I love him in Police academy and his stand-ups LOL the speech impediment he has is part of his whole show and boy does he use it - gets tons of laughs |
I'll admit - I'm not 100% sure... but I've always seen it a B and not the other letter (or letters) so as to avoid the 'Disney Chat Police :D )
As it is - here it has to be a 'B' :) Quote:

aye aye Captain!
I be using LMBO from now on - before I be wearing A Hempen Halter!!! |

As for FPS games...played em all from the very beginning...used to even compete semi-pro leagues when it was the PGL and OGL...back during Q2 and did the QuakeCons for Q3...spent many a night with GTKRadiant making a ton of maps...Neil Manke was my hero of the time...those that remember him will from his mods for Quake 2 and Half Life(They Hunger 1,2 & 3; DarkStar), plus the granddaddy of all user made maps...The Edge... Now even though, after reading the various posts, I will agree that many FPS games are just the same grind over and over...but there were quite a few that broke barriers and set standards by which all are judged... We had the DOOM and Quake series...but rem how monotone the colors were?...that was shattered by the original Unreal which brough us vivid color to FPS games, plus a wicked AI for that time period(rem the SKaarj?)...then all molds were broken when Half-Life came out...the numero uno FPS game which was only usurped by it's sequel Half-Life 2...both had compelling storylines as well as great action and suspense... Of course other games broke molds as well...rem the Thief series? From first person shooters to Thief and First Person Stealth where you hid in the shadows and had to avoid trouble...Clive Barker brought us Undying which was First Person Horror...even though many FPS games copied each other many others were very innovative and lead the way to the newer technology and games we have today...one such game, even though ridden with bugs, is the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series which is deeply immersive within an ever changing enviroment...call it a living world... Each genre has it's place...MMO's give an ever expanding world whereas FPS games are limited...but some have tried to combine the two...when they get it right we'll have a grand time... |
Agreed with Nightwolf
-- But you left out Crysis and Crysis Warhead Now they are AWESOME games - I have Bioshock too but its story wasnt the best to me |
