The Shipyard

http://www.piratesonlineforums.com/g...e_Shipyard.JPGWelcome to the Shipyard! This is a thread designed for the disscussion of any historical vessels from the age of discovery to modern tall ships and replicas. We will discuss types of such ships as well, and their powerful roles in history. There are many who ponder and take an interest in this field,I encourage anyone else looking to find a little more about this subject may come in as well for the ride.
I will be placing my first ship to discuss here on the marrow:Either the Grand Turk ,a sixth-rate frigate British replica recently sold to a person in France or the fabled HMS Victory ,Vice Admiral Nelson's Ship-of-the-line flagship ,from the most famous and amazing sea battle from the Napoleonic era.

The Merrimack-a Union ship in the American civil war that was part of the Naval blockade surrounding the Confederacy. The confederacy captured it, renamed it the Virginia, and refitted it with iron plating. The confederacy then used the ship to fight the ships in the blockade. The ship was indestructable and cannonballs just bounced off of it. The Union didn't let this go unnoticed they used their own iron-clad ship, The Monitor and used it to fight the Virginia. Neither ship could sink the other and the confederacy decomissioned the Virginia and the War continued.

Ah yes I heard a little of that, those refit ironclads really packed a fatal punch against even the largest wood frigates.Ive heard during the American Civil War that the blockade by the Yankees cutoff almost alll trade, but the south was pretty self- suffecient. But that was the first battle of ironclad ships in world history unless I am mistaken. There were a bunch of frigates at the battle as well but I think they lay away from the fighting, letting the two new vessels try to sink eath other.
