upgrading swords

how do you upgrade your sword?
My skills button tells me I need to upgrade, I just don't know how to do it
I keep fighting to level up, is this the way?

Yes, the best way to level up is to fight the skeletons on Port Royal.

or you can just fight the guards on ships
