As with any weapon pick an enemy you can barely kill in order to level the weapon fast.
generally the weakest attack with each weapon gains the most rep simply put the more times you hit anything the more rep you get with 100 being max per weapon plus crew bonus.
Experiment with different enemy and levels you want to get at least 50 plus rep per kill in order to level quickly. as you level and power goes up do not continue in the same spot as you will get lower and lower rep for that same enemy.
Continue on and find more challenging prey.
on extremely har opponents switch weapons back and forth in mid fight and your total rep can get as high as 450 or more (spread throughout all the weapons you used)
Generally speaking it only takes 24 hours to level a new pirate to level 20 and 3 weeks to completely master him to level 40 and all weapons 25 and fully mastered
This is without glitching..
