Can I just sail around (forever) looking for a timer that says "Ready to Board"..?

Do new ships just pop-up from no-where... or are they sailing round & round in a holding pattern, waiting to go back out..? I get stuck in there, and they don't seem to sink- They sink me in one or two shots....

I got my coats without boarding. If I recall I sunk 3 or 4 ships before a got them.

The ships that have to be boarded are the ones that have a flag above their name. You use your cannons on the ship just like you were going to sink it. When its HP gets to zero instead of sinking it becomes disabled. At that time pull up along the side of the ship that has 4 green circle now showing. Get on a cannon and switch from cannon balls to grappling hooks. Aim at a green circle and fire. Latch on a couple of those and you will see a message at the top of the screen asking if you want to board the ship. Click on it and you will swing over and fight the 3 or 4 gaurds on board. (I like taking a couple out with cannons before I go over). Kill the gaurds and you will automatically be back on your ship. Now sink the ship with a cannon shot and the pluder is yours. A couple notes here, it is wise to look at the level of the guards before boarding. Some are very high, even on a low level ship. It does not pay to even grapple the ship if this is the case, unless your crew is up for the fight.

New ships do pop up out of no where to replace others. I have had some misfortune to have some pop up while in combat and sink me. And ships do sail around in a holding type patern as well. It does pay to watch their movements as you approach to give you an idea of a good area to engage. If you need too fire a couple of long cannon shots (with hits) to lure one out of its pattern to come to you and avoid entering an area of ships. Good luck...
