If you are just trying to build your complete set of war ships, I'd get the war galleon first. It is less expensive than the war frigate, yet the enormous cargo holds allow you to build up a lot of gold very quickly. Once your sailing techniques are past "beginner," it makes very little difference (war frigate vs. war galleon) which you drive. They admittedly have very different "feels" though, so don't expect them to work the same, your first time out.

As a pirate, the POTCO war galleon just "looks" more like a real pirate ship. The war frigate, on the other hand, looks snazzy, but would sink when the first real wave washed over its bow. (I know that doesn't happen in POTCO, but should. Maybe when they add the Kraken? Same for all sloop class ships.)

The benefit of having front cannons might help a little in SvS, but since they are slower than war sloops, it is much less of an advantage than you'd think. When helping a single person level cannons, a frigate's front cannons can work (as described in another post above) but limits you to very few people up front who actually get a decent angle on the target. In SvS, a war galleon only helps the enemy - when you launch a war galleon in SvS, you are ONLY donating salvage points to the enemy. (Less scrupulous guilds intentionally launch war galleons from the enemy side, to replenish their hull points, much faster than if they stopped for slow repairs. Just sink the non-firing war galleon and poof, "+2600 Salvage.")

Again, if your goal is plunder (building up gold quickly) then get a war galleon first.
