There are number of different things happening with different people.
Mac's seem to be getting their stuff fixed with emptying out the cache.

Pc's are having a issue crashing before they even get to the character window after log in. These problems are occurring with ati and nvidia video cards from what I can tell. I am using a nvidia card and haven't had this happen myself. If unsure you can go to start on the tool bar, click run, type in dxdiag, and hit ok. This will bring up the directx diagnostic tool, click the display tab, and in the device window will be listed the video driver you use. Under the system tab, the bottom of the page will list what directx version you are using.

Now if ya have one of these video cards and are crashing before reaching the character window it has been mentioned on another post here to delete the game_options file, and start over at logging in.

If reaching the character window and trying to change the graphics appearing at the right top corner, first log out and go back to the log in window. Use the graphic option button and change it, hit continue. log in and see if the proper graphics appears in the character window now. If this graphic option is not working ( like for me = no continue button) Go to pirates online folder, double click the Game_api folder, and change it manually. Pandagl, pandadx8, or pandadx9, and when you log in again this change should appear in the character window.

Above case you want to change default to pandadx9, if you have directx9c. I don't believe texture_compression belongs there, did you write that in? Texture compression is on the options panel from the character menu or in game under display or graphics, and you check it on or off.

Other old fixes for many is as follows: go to control panel from start, settings, control panel, display, settings, advanced, troubleshoot. Turn write combing off, uncheck it. Perhaps move hardware acceleration down a click or two if getting graphic problems, cuts, breaks, lags.
