Check to make sure a lot of other junk, particularly Instant Messengers aren't running. You can check your Task Manager (Good old CTRL-ALT-DEL in XP, etc.) and see what all is running.
Search Indexer - kill it
Any kind of Trays (Adobe, QuickTime, WinZip) - kill them
