This is why I suggest using the Port broadsides, and sailing CCW around the enemy ship when sailing solo. If you turn to starboard, they turn to port, and you open yourself to their broadsides shots.
If you go CCW around them, you can keep yourself dead in front of them by using your sails to start and stop, and they can't damage you near as much.
