I find Dreadnoughts and most other Frigates have something in common.
When you shoot them from far, they will aim to you. The thing is, they might not usually fire at you with their front guns, so it's safe to stay right there until they turn. When they turn, they begin firing. If you move while they are still far away, but in range for front gun firing, they WILL shoot at that moment. So it's safe to shoot down the sails, and stay right there.
Dreadnoughts might be able to move slowly to you, but the statement above is still set in stone.
