Basicly what it means is there defraging there systems for performance and fixing hardrive errors and scaning for any kind virus or spyware or maleware just like a normal computer would.Thats all maintenance is.
The only thing they update is the hardware they dont add any game updates dooring this time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So if you see it going into maintenance it's a good thing!!!!!
It helps the game run better after words!!!!!!

This is a good explanation in theory, this is what standard server maintenance in any business environment would likely follow.
The truth is (IMO) that we do not know exactly what they are doing when they do server maintenance. They could be upgrading bandwidth, swapping out and upgrading equipment, and they can also be software patchs on. The 'known' truth is that they represent all of the above processes the same to us. "Server Maintenance", etc. We find out afterwards what this maintenance entailed if it had anything to do with software updates (game), etc. I do not believe I have ever seen an announcement such as "Closed for game updates". Even the game updates were labeled "Server Maintenance".
