There are means of protection!

Making every single member an officer is an option. Only the GM can demote an officer, and an officer cannot be ejected without being demoted first. As SOS said though, if the GM goes AWOL, the guild is hung. Also, I don't agree with every songle member being an officer. That staus is reserved for the senior guild members. We have seen an example just yesterday on the grog blog of a guild officer abusing his/her position, and it has been discussed in a different thread.
This may work best in a small guild only.

Other than the obvious, which is that you have to be careful in promoting members to officer, there are other ways to protect a guild.

The GM should have EVERY SINGLE officer in her/his friends list. Not just the pirates friends list, but the players list also. The officers should make sure that they have each other friended.

The non-officers should have at least 2 active officers in their friends lst.

This is just a calling tree. Like the high school band, the girl scout troop, the softball league, the church choir, or any other organization would have.

If something bad happens, whether it be due to a rogue officer deleting the entire guild, or if somehow Disney screws up and deletes the guild, the calling tree would be there to get the word out and bring everyone back together. Calls can be made in any direction. A deleted guild could have it's core put back together in only a day or two, and the rest would follow as they log back into the game.
