I remember last year (08) for the fathers day quest even though I had completed the quest and used up all my double rep, if I had someone on board my ship that was starting the quest and got whatever it was that they needed from a ship, it counted for me too.
I never was able to actually get the double rep again, but maybe something similar happened to you.
