Aztec gods and a Greek goddess have already appeared in the movies alone (well, the Aztec gods weren't seen, only mentioned--and Calypso may just be a name). Anyway, there is apparently a way for drowned men and ships to be recovered, there is a magic that ocean-animalfies humans, there is a sealing of sorts, there is a man living with a heart somewhere miles away, etc. Oh, and all this was in the movies alone too.
In the game there is voodoo, which seems, based on how the doll and staff are constructed, to be personally-related, meaning they have to be constructed by the user, they grow based on the notoriety of the user (your overall voodoo amount, the higher damage you do at higher noto), and they have power according to what the user has already defeated or where they already defeated something--I assume the staff only works on a Caribbean island. Then there are the totems, which I don't know how to work out, as I've forgotten the totem missions for each island. There is teleportation friends and crew and such, which can be called a feature of the game.
I'll call a curse a curse, though if you want I'll try to make a storied logic to how it all works. Maybe principles like conservation and entropy could be worked in, who knows.
