When creating a Pirate, just enter the name you want it to have then press enter OR choose from the names already there and push enter. After that (when you are finished), you will be given a temporarily name. It doesn't take that long for them to accept it. For me, about the second time I logged on with my first Pirate, which was like immediately after I crashed playing.
