I agree that we could use more skills, BUT - as pirates we aren't earning our living via trades. We are earning it by plunder and pillage.
Maybe having gun and blacksmith apprenticeships would help improve our weapon skills? Or being an apprentice shipswright would let you repair at sea instead of in port?
