The page where it says "Copy the code and click here to Play" should be in the background...don't leave the page.
I just logged into the game from my desktop (with that page in the background) and used the /code with the code supplied and it was an instant 500 gold into my inventory! -)
I didn't need to be in any shop for it to work.
