The only thing crew bonus seems to affect, is the captain's bonus when landing a ship with cargo. The captain's bonus is 50 gold for each person in crew. Gold farming in Governor's Garden with a crew nets much less treasure because your individual pirate accomplishes significantly fewer kills. In Governor's Garden, with or without crew, treasures drop for 10% of your kills, cards drop for 5% of your kills. (Same for Kingshead mob.)
Humanoid-shaped enemies tend to give gold (navy soldiers, skeletons) while "creatures" do not. The only gold you get from "creatures" is the gold value of the treasures. So, for example, ranking on Cuba gators nets very little gold. Gray level humanoid enemies give reduced gold amounts; green, yellow and red humanoid enemies give gold proportional to their level.
Also of note: when two pirates defeat an enemy, one pirate may get a treasure while the other does not. It is a pirate-personal calculation. But samples of 2,000 or more enemies defeated still show a consistent 10% & 5% probability rate for the drops.
Certain enemies give "better" cards when they drop cards. The best example, are stumps on Outcast Island - when they drop cards, they are consistently "good" cards. (Tormenta enemies are similar, but not quite as good.)
Also of note: the only way to get spades (5, 6, 7, 8, 9, T, J, Q, K, A) is to do Black Mack quests in Rowdy Rooster on Port Royal. There are two quests you can get from him - the top item makes you kill a bizarre number of duelists, the bottom item makes you kill only a single skeleton. Each time you complete the Black Mack quest, log out then log back in and pick the quest up again.
Also of note: Disney stopped doing clothing drops one year ago. Each clothing drop was obscenely rare; approximately 1 drop for every 50,000 enemies defeated. But they have completely stopped doing them now. No idea why.
