Disney has announced that Pirates 4 will be directed by Rob Marshall, the director of such action packed blockbusters as "Chicago", "Memoirs of a Geisha" and "Nine" (the musical flop, not the animated sock puppet one).

They went on to state that the budget for Pirates 4 has been slashed by a full 33% necessitating a location change from the Caribbean and Los Angeles to Hawaii and London. It's a tax thing...Shooting days have been cut from 145 to 90. Special effect shots will be cut down from 2000 to around 1400.

Bruckheimer is still the producer. According to the Los Angeles Times,"As preproduction gets underway in Hawaii, Marshall and Bruckheimer are going through the script line by line looking for more places to trim costs."

So...when was the last time a sequel was better because of a reduced budget, a different director, an all-but-different cast, not-quite-authentic locations and fewer visual effects?

It's a coin toss really. Pirates 1 and 2 were pretty good. 3? Not great but not terrible. 4? Who knows?
