Look at it this way. If someone " helps " with your enemy, you can defeat it twice as fast. That way, you can burn through two enemies in the time it takes you to beat one ( hypothetically ). Which gives you more chances of loot, more gold, etc.

This may be the case if you are on a quest or just fighting for loot and you want to be done with it but if you are fighting something for rep defeating something twice as fast isn't what you want. With rep the longer it takes you to defeat an enemy the better.
