Yes it was used when SVS first came out and it was really cool. We would sail out to the middle area between he islands and line up nose to stern and when a ship from the opposing team came out they would have to try to bust through it. This was also a real world strategy that was used back then to fight sea battles. In POTC it only works well if you have a large number of ships on your side cause most ships can force through it but a very large amount of gunfire can be brought to bare on an enemy very quickly and when the formation breaks up it lets players team up because of the starting position. One advantage is that generally no one ship in the formation takes on heavy gunfire so a captain can man his cannons and be away from wheel to get stronger hits against the enemy. When the formation begins to break up you just jump on your wheel and steer your ship. Usually the formation breaks in groups so everything was more of a united effort and you rarely came into the situation of running after the enemy and finding yourself alone and surrounded. I have not seen this strategy used since its first release. I think part of it is also that way back in the earlier days of the game it seemed as though going at it on the seas was a bit rougher and communication was not as good so it seemed as though people were more into group fighting in general and watching out more for strangers in distress. For some reason there is not as much sea travel as I remember there being and less instances of getting overwhelmed. On a good note though the game is more playable with lots of people on it as it does not get jammed up as it use to with poor performance because of large crowds forming in pockets on the battle grounds.
