I also use a wireless connection, it does cause somewhat of a lag but not enough to where things don't register, maybe your just not finding the right spots, when I did this the spot was not in a forest or anything, I think it was the spot by the tattoo parlor down from the shipwright in the half boat, it was kind of in the middle of the land.. Hey thanks mate! With the new updates and all, they have fixed the dig spots. Also when I sign into test the connection error problem doesn't happen anymore.
