I think I have this one figured out. I was standing on tortuga, and my boyfriend (who's computer is in the same room and I can see both screens at all times) shot fire cannons from his ship at the island, just playing around. His cannons landed not far from my pirate, and lo and behold, a spot of fire and a pillar of smoke appeared where they landed.
