Chapter 23: To Save A Man

The group was greeted by Matt and a few other Sorcerors upon arrival.

“About time Davy!” Matt said. “Runnin’ a ship ain’t an easy task! Got to give you some credit there, your doing a mighty fine job. When your present that is.”

“Good to see you too Matt,” Davy said, clapping him on the back. “Matt, I need you to get Meg Mcbones, our lookout. I believe that she used to be a healer. Her skills are needed here.”

“You, go fetch Meg,” Matt said to one of his men around him. “What happened? Was someone hurt? And where’s Billy? Is he okay?”

“Sam,” Will said, with Sam still slung over his shoulder. “He was shot with a poisoned bullet somewhere in his side about two or so days ago when we were in the Catacombs.”

“Captain! I’m here!” said Meg, hurrying towards them. “Oh dear, Sam looks bad… Captain Fireskull, can we take him into your quarters? There’s open space there, and privacy.”

Davy nodded, and they hurried in. Meg laid Sam down on a spare bed, pulled off his shirt, and examined his wound.

“Gæfa mín, how is he still alive?” She muttered to herself. “Shot with a poisoned bullet in a spot like that? Two days ago you say? You’re lucky he’s still breathing! Most grown men would have died after the first few hours! Did you do anything to treat him?”

Zolina nodded, “A little. We cleaned the wound as best we could, and changed the bandages often. Made sure he was still drinking, and we kept him warm.”

“Can he be saved?” Davy asked hopefully.

“I think so…” Meg said slowly. “First I need you to tell me what his state was like after he was shot, so I can find out what poison it was. Depending on the poison, I will or will not be able to help him…”

“Well, he was out cold for the first two or so hours,” Luckie said. “After that, he started sweating madly, and made some grunting noises. The wound stopped bleeding, but it swelled badly and looked infected. After that incident, he slept more or less peacefully for a day or so. More recently, his breathing has become shallower and sounds like its taken more effort. He looks mighty pale as well.”

Meg examined the rest of his body, and then spoke. “A very deadly poison was used on this bullet… it’s a snake venom from a serpent in South America. Very deadly, very effective. Here is where the bad news comes in. There is a way that I can heal him, and perhaps prolong his life a little, but there is no known cure. None that I know of at least. I’m sorry.”

The group stood there, looking at Sam. His breaths were short and seemed to require effort. A bead of sweat trickled down his face. He was dying, and the Sorcerors knew that. They thought that he could be saved, but now they knew that he was done for. Unless…

“Wait a minute… Meg, you said there is no known cure correct?” Davy asked.

“Yes sir,” Meg said, raising an eyebrow.

“However, your healing is limited to herbal healings, if I am not mistaken?”

“No sir, you are correct. I am a master at herbal healings.”

“What about voodoo? I am not saying that we could heal him, I doubt that, but maybe there is someone who could. Someone who is a master at the voodoo arts, someone who can use it to heal?”

Will Seaeagle’s eye’s widened. “Oh no, you don’t mean her. Please don’t tell me we are going to visit her.”

“What?” Zolina said. “Who is this lady?”

“Tia Dalma,” Davy stated. “Voodoo master. If anyone can save Sam, she can.”

“Ah glory…” Will muttered.

“Davy! That’s genius!” Meg said. “But there is one problem… Tia lives in the Pantano River on Cuba. We are currently at Padres Del Fuego. It’s a long sail Davy, Sam may not make it. Even if I do some of my healing on him, he probably won’t make it.”

“That’s sailing normally!” Davy said. “Are we a normal ship? No! We are a ship of voodoo users! Now, with full colors, we could probably get to Cuba in just over a week. Now, if we use full colors and we use voodoo to accelerate our ship faster, we can probably reach Cuba in five days. Can we keep him alive for that long?”

Meg thought for a few moments, then she said, “If we get some good winds on our backs, a little bit of luck, and Sam holds out strong, then probably yes.”

“Then it’s a plan,” Davy announced. “Will, go outside and order full colors, and sail us in the direction of Cuba. I think that I should get to explaining what happened on Padres to Matt while Meg starts treating Sam.

“Yes Captain!” Will said before hurrying out.

After he left, Meg rushed off to her hammock in the crew’s quarters to get some supplies for Sam. The rest of the group left Davy’s cabin, leaving Davy, Matt, and the unconscious Sam Bladebeard. They sat in silence for a while, and after a few minutes, Meg came back. She began mixing together herbs and liquids, applying them to Sam one at a time while Davy told them what occurred during the past few days. All the while, Davy stared at Sam’s face, desperately watching him for any sort of sign that he would wake up.
