Attack a flagship as ye would normally. Once it is ready to board, do not do so. Just sail away. This will sink the ship. Repeat this to get only loot drops and no crates, treasure chests, or royal chests.
.......but be careful to have plenty of inventory room, because only 5 loot items will show the rest will not. So have room so ye can except it all.
I found this out the hard way.
