I also remember that you could see allies on their ships as well. However, I don't recall when the whisper button was put into place, so I don't remember if it was possible to actually yell from one ship and hear it on the other. Brings up the time when one of my old friends was playing on a different pirate, rammed the back end of my frigate, and either yelled or whispered, "Hey Jack!"
Shoot... reminds me of how long I've been around...
