I love my war sloop; and, the more I sail it, the greater my preference for it grows. I do also own a (medium) frigate; I do like it for parked cannon training (because I have to return to the helm less often with cannons covering all but my rear arc). I think I would also probably prefer to use the frigate to train potential crew candidates, just for the extra protection the frigate provides.

So far, I have used it exclusively as a solo sailor. I would add agility/minimal ship profile to the advantages of the war sloop. Frigates and galleons perform fine in stop/start evasion tactics, but the sloop shape opens up some more opportunities to use "spin-in-place" and moving/tacking maneuvers. The movement and combat speed of the war sloop is definitely nice too though.

I'll agree with what the other sloop sailors above me have said, it will depend on what tactics you personally enjoy using when sailing.

If you look out across the ocean, and see a number of discrete tactical positions that you could use to switch between helm and cannon to take out preferred ships in some relatively high traffic areas without sustaining much damage on your own vessel, then the war sloop might be for you.
