Sloops are MUCH more maneuverable than frigates, enabling you to do more effective boat karate.
There's a sweet spot behind every ship where it can't bring its cannons to bear on you. If you can get there, you can sink anything by lining up one pair of broadsides on one side of the stern, firing, then switching to the other side of the stern and firing the other set of broadsides. Repeat until sunk. Sloops are ideal for this tactic. (Note: this doesn't work well on skeleton ships)
I did this with the Juggernaut in my regular sloop (not war). But every time I'd fire, the health only went down one pixel. I could have sunk it if I'd been willing to sit there for half an hour and hope that nothing else would have come in range.
