I've always disliked that argument. "Because we're pirates." Sure, our
characters are pirates in the
game, but not the real players. I mean, if we all used the "We're pirates" excuse, I'd probably be out plundering, pillaging, and torturing some innocent townsfolk. As the player, in my opinion, we shouldn't be trying to take advantage of the system. It's dishonorable, you could say.
I'm not overly fond of the pointless competition either. It's buying them time by telling us to "vote for the best pirate", but the Caribbean is so scattered with various players that it's insanely difficult to garner votes for anyone without, as you say it, gaming the system. It's a nice little paradox we have here.
