I went from laggy with minimum detail to no lag with full detail:

1. Right click the desktop (Any empty space)
2. Click Personalize on the bottom of the menu
3. Click Theme
4. From the drop down menu change to "Windows Classic"
5. Click Apply or OK

This will save a good chunk of memory unloading the Vista special effects. Also frees up your video card alot.
