I had to sell my war galleon to pay for the cannonball barrel. It doesn't bother me as my 2 war frigates make up for it. I am actually not too bothered about the gold it cost me as I have already made 10k back doing the new weapons quests and sinking ships.
Prices for stuff are gonna go up and down. I will take it in my stride, but I do agree with the fact that noobs do not have to go through what we went through to earn the gold to buy the weapons.
Have the rep levels gone down for the old top tier weapons? That I definitely disagree with. They should have put a higher rep requirement for the new wepaons
