I tried pvp for the first time the other night and my complete lack of passive skills and some of the buffs that seem unimportant in open play became tragically clear.
I'm at lvl 37 - but was annihilated in seconds by a lvl 31 who used stun and then sliced me to pieces before the effects wore off. The result was a commitment to make better use of skill points to keep my pirate balanced for pvp or open play.
This is effected dramatically by point assignment in grenades.
Davy Redflint has given you some good advice. Keep points out of the actual grenade slots to earn more rep for each kill (multiplied when working with a crew for the crew bonus or those ever so fleeting times when Disney blesses us with a bonus period). You can keep those points in "the bank" until you max out the weapon and then place them in for greater damage.
Also, the more rep per kill the faster you will increase in levels - which will allow you to buy the larger belts (to carry more grenades, to kill more enemies). I am laboring hard to get to level 17 to increase the number of grenades I can carry each trip to Tormenta.
Last tip - in Tormeta shoot a Molusk with Hex Eater until he's unable to attack (I have five points in hex eater and it takes three shots to render them incapacitated). Once they can't fight back you can lob your low damage level grenades at them for the most rep. With a crew bonus a lvl 37 or 38 Molusk will give you 120-130 rep using this tactic.
