I would save up your skill points and use them anytime a new hex or skill is avaible.
Then when you master your doll you'll have all the extra points left over to use.
I put my attune all the way up to four which comes in handy a lot.
But passive skills are important too so try using some points on those.
But I would say that anytime something is avaible then use a skill point on it.
I used two points on poke and swarm each for starters but that's just me. It's your hcoice mostly but choose wisely.
