I had this happen to me day before yesterday. Boarding a flagship, three seconds after boarding, about the time hitting the first navy dude, the flagship just sunk. No other enemy boats were nearby or on compass...ship health had been about 70%.
I found my pirate doing the superman, just as Max had described, with no jail below. (Gah! After going through all that above, I SEARCHED for it.) Completely wrong z-axis controls, like my mouse was shifted 90 degrees or something. No ship and no jail...just stuck. When I closed pirates.exe, it had consumed about two times the available computer memory (neat trick, with the paging file turned off/disabled!) Sailing, in general, seems more memory-leaky than ever these days. It may have just been too much, for the scene change. And since I had crew, on my boat, I think it crashed everyone in my random crew, with me.
It would be nice if they had scene-change garbage collection (similar to OPTIONS, Geometry, Memory Conservation = aggressive.) But then they would have to bring back the one-hour sea voyage timer/limit. That would add an interesting twist to SvS!
To get a soldier that is "out of reach" first zoom compass all the way in. Press the "=" key (or keypad "+".) Find the enemy red dot and get as close to it as you can. Then use throwing daggers or cutlass sweep, same as you would for the flying sergeant on Padres del Fuego.
