My experience (and only place ever needed to was at catacombs/padres) was exactly what Edward has said. I found that depending on when you were "poisoned", poison itself generally will not kill you, it always goes and remains at 1 hp. But if you were struck by something else in the duration to 'assist' the poison I guess you could say. You will die, but technically its not by the poison, but by that action/attack that assisted it.
I have also noticed, that when special skills are used, the value of the damage is automatically subtracted (including the poison/skill durations effect), the health bars reflect it differently for effect (we see the damage numbers -300 etc immediately). An easy way to see this (a combination that amplifies it so its noticeable). Using "Bladestorm" on cutlass, will kill the mob instantly, if that is going to be the outcome of bladestorm, and doesnt wait for the animation to complete before they die. They only do not die instantly if they will survive bladestorm and require another attack.
