It shouldn't be too hard to get a chance to try someone else's ship. I've been on several crews where the captain has begged for someone to give them a break from driving. You could also try the smaller versions of each. If you like a regular frigate you'll love a war frigate and conversely, if you like a reg. galleon you'll love the war galleon.

When reading these stats be aware of a couple of things. One is that "Speed Sail Points" does not refer to the speed of the ship but rather the hit points for the sail. It seems a lot of people make that mistake. The other is that these stats do not tell the whole story. They tell you nothing about the speed and maneuverability of the ship nor do they tell you how big of a target the ship presents. These factors are just as important as the factors enumerated in the chart.

So try them out and see which fits your sailing style and fighting style. That's the best ship for you. The best ship for me or anyone else is irrelevant.
