I just chalk it up to the teenagers (whether actually or mentally) trying to prove how cool they are. It's rather desperate on their part.

I did that with one of my baby pirates. It was a challenge to not wind up in jail and then have to sail all the way back. But I earned those grenades on my own and without using a glitch.
